Windows 10: Windows does not open apps

My MS Surface Pro 7 is about a year old. Its OS is up to date, and so is Microsoft 365 that I subscribe to. Windows Version is 1909 Build 18363-1256.


I placed a PDF on the desktop and double tapped on it. The document opens for a split second then is shut down again. I cannot get it to open. Reinstalling Acrobat Reader DC DID NOT FIX this


Now the same issue happens when I tried from inside a message inside Outlook to reply to a post in the community. No such luck. The same thing happens: the site blinks at me for two nanoseconds and then Windows returns me to the email.


Should I try to roll back the latest update?

This is the suggested solution below if you haven't already tried it.

In this Windows 10 build 10041, the Mail, Calendar, and People apps may be broken due to a licensing issue with the Store Beta. To get these apps working again, you need to follow these steps:

• Open powershell as administrator
• Run the command Get-appxprovisionedpackage –online | where-object {$_.packagename –like “*windowscommunicationsapps*”} | remove-appxprovisionedpackage –online
• Re-install Mail, People and Calendar from the Store (green tile)

I did that to no avail, then I ran WSReset.exe; now I'm good on all 3, Mail, Calendar and People! *Confused

Can I customize the list of suggest apps in the "Open with" menu?

You can't use it to add additional programs, only to set default programs.

Interestingly for me it shows nothing for text files:








Then if I want to add a portable app like Jarte Plus to open with context menu windows doesn't like it.





It's not present and is near impossible to add even via "look for an app on this PC"
