Windows 10: windows DVD player recently does not work

Hello All,


I have windows 10 on an older (2012) Dell Inspiron desktop. The last few days. seemingly for no reason, when I put a commercial DVD in the external tray in the tower (I mean a DVD that I did not "burn" myself) it 1) it does not start automatically, and in fact 2) doesn't start at all. When the tray is fully in place inside the tower nothing happens.-- though the tower emits a uhh, uhh sound as if trying to read it-- but in the end, nothing happens.

BUT here is the curious thing-- I have several feature movies that I downloaded weeks and months ago in a folder--inc a Jurrasic park movie- and the DVD player works perfectly when I play them. It's only when I try and play a DVD via the external tray that nothing works.


I have a 20-part DVD series of lessons I use in my classes-- (US history) and I like to review them the night before, see which one I going to use, and so on. and also I like to watch DVD documentaries and such in my home office. point being, I would get that "tower tray" method of viewing DVDs working again.


so, what might be going on, and what can I do to solve the problem (I admit, I'm a boomer with not much tech experience)

Burned DVD's Work in SOME players

In that case, it is possible the problem is with the blu ray player not supporting DVD+R disks.

Suggest you check to make sure: it's possible you can overcome this problem by simply burning DVD-R instead of DVD+R. Check your blu ray compatibility list first.

Follow these steps to run Hardware and Devices troubleshooter:

• Press Windows key + X and click on Control Panel.
• Select Troubleshooting.
• Select View all on the top left corner.
• Click Hardware and Devices.
• Follow the on-screen instruction to run the troubleshooter.

Method 2: Uninstall and reinstall the driver

I suggest you to try uninstall the DVD drive drivers check if it works for you. Follow the steps to uninstall the DVD drive drivers:

• Press Windows Key + X key and click Device Manager.
• Right-click on the DVD drive listed and click on ‘Uninstall’.
• Select the option to Delete driver software.
• Restart the computer after its uninstalled.

Try to access the device manufacturer's website and download and install the latest chipset drivers.
