Windows 10: Windows Explore crashes when an image file is selected

When I click on an image file,in Explorer, .jpg,etc. An hour glass appears, then Explorer crashes, and returns me to the desktop. I've tried sfc and restore image online. It did not make any difference. What should I do now?

I am having the same problem as the OP in this thread.
Windows Explorer crashes whenever I open my external HDD or thumb drive in explorer..

I have tried the fixes listed in the above thread and I am getting the same error message as 'ktadie' (post 16). I think this is because I am running Windows 7 Professional. Windows explorer crashes when I open my 'Films' folder on my brand new 2tb external HDD. I have about 300 .avi files in this folder and some of the .avi files are several years old.

In short I believe I need the same fix given by 'Wile E' (post 7) but updated for Windows 7 Professional.

thats wierd... iv never had a large file crash explorer before....


and i have files ranging upto 80GB...

As you have tried many troubleshooting steps with no avail, I suggest you to try the methods below and check if this helps.

Method 1: If the issue persists, run
SFC scan and DISM scan by following the steps below and check if the issue is caused due to any of the system files missing or corrupted on the PC.

SFC scan is a utility in Windows that allows users to scan for corruptions in Windows system files and restore corrupted files. If a
Windows Resource Protection (WRP) file is missing or is corrupted, Windows may not behave as expected. For example, some Windows functions may not work, or Windows may crash.

Windows corruption errors may prevent Windows updates and service packs from installing. For example, an update might not install if a system file is damaged. The
DISM scan or System Update Readiness tool may help you to fix some Windows corruption errors.

Step 1: Open an Administrator command prompt
window by

• Press Windows logo + X keys on the keyboard and select
  Command Prompt (Admin) option.
• Click on Yes and continue. Provide administrator password if prompted.
• Check if it says Administrator: Command Prompt at the top of the command prompt window.

Step 2: Type the following commands in the
CMD Prompt:

Dism.exe /online /cleanup-image /scanhealth


Dism.exe /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth

sfc /scannow

If the issue still persists, try the below and check.

Method 2: I suggest you to create a new user account and check if the same issue occurs.

Here are the steps:

• Go to Settings.
• Choose Accounts and then select
  Family and other users.
• Select add someone else on this PC.
• Enter a user name and hit next.
• Click on Finish.
• Sign out from the current Account and Log into the new account.
