  1. Windows Explorer and restart problems - something ain't right!

I've been having some trouble with my PC recently. I believe the symptoms are all related...Symptoms are:Upon start up, everything is fine, but after a while maybe an hour or two, windows explorer starts acting up. I have to manually refresh to see any changes made. 1. Click the 'New Folder' button and nothing happens , no new folder shows up. 2. Refresh explorer, A New Folder shows up with the text highlighted immediately to change the name. 3. Change the name to "Test", hit enter, name hasn't changed, still says "New Folder". 4. After failing to change the name, double click "New Folde

Windows Explorer has encountered a problem

Yep. The problem is that Windows is trying to preview the files, but for some reason, Windows can't handle some avis. The fix will get rid of the preview for all file types, tho.

Click the start button, then click run, then type:

    regsvr32 /u shmedia.dll

And hit enter. After that, you either have to restart explorer, or just restart windows.

  4. Windows Explorer and restart problems - something ain't right!

Re; a problem with right clicking on any file

I like dalchina's first suggestion: try ShellExView. It fixed things for me many times in the past.

Program hooks and add-ons must be well-written. If not they can cause big problems.

So, using ShellExView, sort the items by manufacturer. Everything in the list above and below Microsoft is suspect.

When you disable an add-on ... I think you have to restart windows explorer to see the results.
So just disable a few add-ons at a time and restart explorer.
You know you've hit the right add-on when the problem disappears.
