Windows 10: Windows explorer continues to hang and crash

For months now Windows 11 Explorer has been both hanging and crashing. I have provided feedback via Feedback Hub here https://aka.ms/AAlglrr - please upvote if you have the same issue. I have implemented all the usual fixes from clearing cache, deleting automatic and custom destnations, DSIM and SFC, and have implemented all new updates as soon as they are available. I am now on 10.0.22635 Build 22635In the absence of feedback from the MS team I am left to wonder if mine is a localised problem peculiar to my setup or if there is a more widespread issue with explorer. Windows explorer crashing

Hi,

I am having the same problem as the OP in this thread.
Windows Explorer crashes whenever I open my external HDD or thumb drive in explorer..

I have tried the fixes listed in the above thread and I am getting the same error message as 'ktadie' (post 16). I think this is because I am running Windows 7 Professional. Windows explorer crashes when I open my 'Films' folder on my brand new 2tb external HDD. I have about 300 .avi files in this folder and some of the .avi files are several years old.

In short I believe I need the same fix given by 'Wile E' (post 7) but updated for Windows 7 Professional.

File Explorer crash/hang/badness

I have seen this question for many years. Has there ever been a resolution?

So, i have a great number of machines/users who are experiencing File Manager (Explorer) continually crash. I have replaced machines to said users. Explorer still crashes. Windows 10 clean build (Explorer crashes), windows 11 Clean build, Explorer crashes.

The logs reveal nothing. Not why, or even what was happening at the time.

From SFC to booting in Safe mode, VM machines, etc, Explorer crashes.

Any thoughts, suggestions, ideas ?

Sometimes 3rd party apps hanging off IE7 (in Vista) will cause this.

You could try to disable DEP protection for that app. From the Control Panel-System>Advanced Settings>Performance>Data Excecution Prevention. Add IE7 to the list and reboot.

If that doesn't work, make sure all your security settings are in good order. Mine kept crashing until I enabled Windows firewall. (Not quite sure why it was disabled by default. Plus Windows Defender needed to be started in the Services.)
