Windows 10: Windows Explorer crashes when I click M1 & M2 on an image file

My issue is the title of this post, however this seems to have led to a plethora of other issues as well.

The start menu no longer works, for starters

I have tried opening my settings to reinstall the photos app, which I believe to be the centre of the problem. Upon clicking 'Default apps', my settings application crashes. I have tried opening the settings for the photos app so I can terminate, uninstall and reinstall it. This just causes my settings app to crash.


Powershell does not fix the problem. I have attempted to force uninstall the photos app with Powershell, it does not work.

I enter "get-appxpackage *Microsoft.Windows.Photos* remove-appxpackage",

It simply returns with an error message.

I have attempted going to the Microsoft Store and installing Microsoft Photos from there. It downloads, but fails on install, here is a screenshot including an error code.


I have done everything I can, what options have I left?

Windows explorer crashing

I am having the same problem as the OP in this thread.
Windows Explorer crashes whenever I open my external HDD or thumb drive in explorer..

I have tried the fixes listed in the above thread and I am getting the same error message as 'ktadie' (post 16). I think this is because I am running Windows 7 Professional. Windows explorer crashes when I open my 'Films' folder on my brand new 2tb external HDD. I have about 300 .avi files in this folder and some of the .avi files are several years old.

In short I believe I need the same fix given by 'Wile E' (post 7) but updated for Windows 7 Professional.

thats wierd... iv never had a large file crash explorer before....


and i have files ranging upto 80GB...

Effective Way to Solve the File Explorer Crashes Issue

You can try the following steps:

1. Tap down the Windows button first to activate the search bar.
2. After that, in the search bar type control, and then click on the top-most search result, that is on Control Panel.
3. Next, in the search bar type file.
4. Now, from the search results click on File Explorer Options.
5. Then, click on the Clean button.
6. Lastly, click on Apply and then on OK.
