    Windows Explorer crashes when opening a long name network path


    Hi,I know this is been asked before and I know a work-around is to disable showing previews instead of icons and making Explorer open to This PC instead of recents, but I don't want to use this method. I use previews a lot for work such as for photos and documents, and I don't want to work without them.Plus, a lot of my colleagues navigate the same folders and their Explorer doesn't crash. Is there a solution to this problem? I don't want a work-around I demand a fix! This is issue has been known for years now and I can't believe it has not been yet solved.

    Long file paths crash explorer after anniversary update.

    Hi Lads, I was wondering if someone could help.

    I have an issue where we use long file paths, which can't really be changed, there are too many of them, since the last update we are experiencing the following issues, with the work arounds I have provided.

    1 - Opening a long file name folder causes quick access to crash, resulting in explorer crashing on opening.

    A - Set the view options to open "This PC" instead of quick access.

    2 - Opening a folder with a long file path with preview enabled causes explorer to crash.

    A - Turn off the preview pane

    3 - Searching for files in long folder paths sometimes causes explorer to crash.

    A - ???

    I have used a GPO to role out the work arounds among the 30 machines, but I have tried enabling the long file paths with no help.

    I can replicate all issues, but cant work out how to let someone search for the files. If there is a better answer I would love to hear it.

    The tenforums link solved this issue for me.

    The root cause is a Windows 10 bug where File Explorer crashes when long file names are included in a search result. The steps for the workaround are:

    • Open File Explorer
    • Click View > Options
    • Open the View tab
    • Check "Always show icons, never thumbnails"
    • Click OK

    Long Path Names


    I forgot the other item on my "Wish List", long path name support (the default path name length is ridiculously short).

    Regarding panes and tabs, I use FreeCommander whenever I have to something more than basic file management.
