Windows Explorer crashes and thumbnails problem

Hi, I hope you can help me.
Windows Explorer is no longer showing thumbnails on files played by Windows Media Player. I've run cmd and regsvr32 shmedia.dll and regsvr32 shimgvw.dll. That seemed to solve the problem...but it created a different one. Now when I try to open a folder on an external hard drive it crashes. I read in an old 2008 post it was an avi file causing the problem and suggested the run cmd regsvr32 /u shmedia.dll. That solved the opening problem but recreated the thumbnail problem. Any help to achieve both functions would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

 

Most image thumbnails replaced by icons in file explorer

Most of my image thumbnails have recently been replaced by icons.

I'm not aware of any action that precipitated this change.



This only affects some files, but it affects multiple folders, sizes/ages of file and file types. There seems to be no pattern to which files are affected.



I have tried:

• Checking the display thumbnails box in file explorer view settings
• Clearing thumbnail cache by using the disc cleanup function
• Clearing the thumbnail cache using cmd prompt
  
  taskkill /f /im explorer.exe
  del /f /s /q /a %LocalAppData%\Microsoft\Windows\Explorer\thumbcache_*.db
  

Any help would be much appreciated!

 

DNG files not displaying thumbnail

Well you've tried the suggested DNG viewer and so on. It seems that DNG previews work for everyone else. Including previews for the images you uploaded. We never got a reply to the suggestion to test a new user account. Anyway i know it's not what you want but something like Wildbit Image Viewer or many other alternatives can display thumbnails that explorer might not be able to show. Then you just use it as an image browser and open in any program you like.



Just my opinion. If working with many hundreds or thousands of images Explores is pretty useless at generating thumbnails fast and without corruption.
