  1. Windows explorer external flash drive usage not matching TreeSize. Chkdsk reveals indexes...

Hello,I understand that lots of questions already exist on this topic but they relate to C: drive and I felt mine is a bit different. I have a problem with my 1 TB exFAT drive instead. Windows Drive F: properties page shows that 58.5 GB is used. But TreeSize only shows 50.6 GB used. The difference is 8,876,982,272 bytes 63,216,549,888 bytes - 54,339,567,616 bytes. Running "chkdsk F:" in CMD revealed that this difference is accounted for in 8668160 KB by indexes and 768 KB by system, totaling to 8,876,982,272 when converted as 1KB = 1024 bytes. My question is what are the indexes and system?

    :)

"No items match your search" on a particular external drive but not consistently

    Hi,

Thank you for writing to Microsoft Community Forums.

I appreciate the efforts taken by you in resolving the issue. I understand that you receive an error, ‘No items match your search’ when trying to search on a particular external drive.

    However, please let us know:

    • Were you able to search files in the external drive earlier?
    • Are you aware of any changes made to the computer recently?
    • Does this issue occur if you use the external drive on any other computer?

It could be possible that the search indexing is not working properly. Let us try the steps mentioned below and see if that helps:

    Check Windows Search service:

I would suggest you to check if the Windows Search service is running properly. Refer the steps mentioned below:

    1. Press Windows Logo key + R, to open
      Run dialog box.
    2. Type services.msc and click on
      OK
      .
    3. Look for Windows Search service and double click on it.
    4. Select Automatic from the
      Startup type
      drop-down.
    5. Click on Start and click on
      OK
      .

    Rebuild Search Indexing:

You can try rebuilding the search indexing and see if that helps in resolving the issue. Refer the steps mentioned below:

    1. Press Windows Logo key + R, to open
      Run dialog box.
    2. Type control and click on
      OK
      .
    3. Select Large icons from the drop down for
      View by.
    4. Click on Indexing Options and click on
      Advanced.
    5. Under Troubleshooting, click on
      Rebuild
      .
Note: A Rebuild Index dialog box opens warning that the "index might take a long time to complete." Choose
OK to start rebuilding the index.

  3. Indexing external drives W10

    No Joy

It seems to think there are no issues.

To be clear INDEXING works on the C Drive but not the new E USB external drive even though I have added it to the list of drives to INDEX

External hard drive indexing information lost

    Hi,

It would be great if you can provide me with this information for a better understanding.

    1. Did you add the external hard drive to the list of locations to be indexed from the Indexing Options?

    2. By mentioning “it's registered as an indexed location” do you mean that you have already done this?

If you haven’t added the external hard disk in the Indexing Options, then I would suggest you to follow these instructions and let’s know the result.

    a) Press “windows Logo” + “W” keys on the keyboard to display the “Settings” search bar.

    b) Type “Indexing Options” in that search box and press “Enter” key on the keyboard.

    c) In the “Indexing Options” window, click on “Modify” button.

    d) Under “Change selected locations”, select the external hard disk and add it to the indexing location list.

    e) If you are unable to find the hard disk drive in that list, then click on “Show all locations” and check if the hard disk is shown up there.

    f) Click on “Ok” and then click on “Close”.

Please let me know, if that helps.

You may now check if the issue still happens or not. If the issue persists, you may get back to us with more information about the issue.

    Kind Regards:
