    Windows Explorer problem

I have recently discovered a problem where Windows File Explorer sometimes hangs then freezes. When this happens the only option available is to close the program. Reloading file explorer does not solve the problem and neither does shutting down the laptop, leaving off for five minutes and restarting.

    The symptoms

Windows File Explorer loads correctly and also works correctly except after clicking on an individual file which has a .xlsx, .xlsm. .docx or .pptx extension. I can’t comment on .docm or .pptm files as I don’t use those although I suspect it will apply to those as well. Once such a file has been highlighted by a single click, any further action of any kind results in file explorer initially hanging then freezing. Interestingly this does not apply to files with .xls, .doc or .ppt (older Office formats) extensions which work as they should. In addition, other file formats, e.g. .pdf, .mp3, .mp4 etc. all work as they should. Furthermore, loading any of the problem files using the File / Open menu options in the relevant Office application works correctly.

    The fix

After searching the internet for a couple of hours I found a post from someone who had experienced the same problem (so it is not just me) and, by chance, had discovered that switching off the details pane in File Explorer (View / Details pane) solved the problem for him. It also solved the problem for me. So, it would appear that there is a bug in File Explorer which causes the problem when the details pane is shown.

Is Microsoft aware of this? Is it a bug? If so, is a fix going to be released? Perhaps a Microsoft expert would be able to comment.

    :)

    Windows 10 Tweaks

Pressing “Windows+Pause Break” (it’s up there next to scroll lock) opens the “System” Window.

Windows 10: In the new version of Windows, Explorer has a section called Quick Access. This includes your frequent folders and recent files. Explorer defaults to opening this page when you open a new window. If you’d rather open the usual This PC, with links to your drives and library folders, follow these steps:

    • Open a new Explorer window.
    • Click View in the ribbon.
    • Click Options.
    • Under General, next to “Open File Explorer to:” choose “This PC.”
    • Click OK

Windows Explorer crashes and thumbnails problem

Hi, I hope you can help me.
Windows Explorer is no longer showing thumbnails on files played by Windows Media Player. I've run cmd and regsvr32 shmedia.dll and regsvr32 shimgvw.dll. That seemed to solve the problem...but it created a different one. Now when I try to open a folder on an external hard drive it crashes. I read in an old 2008 post it was an avi file causing the problem and suggested the run cmd regsvr32 /u shmedia.dll. That solved the opening problem but recreated the thumbnail problem. Any help to achieve both functions would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.
