Windows fails to boot successfully after Windows Update. BOOTMGR is missing

Goal: Get the original windows installation on E: working so the old programs can be used. The user has many old programs which were purchased for a one time fee that have changed to a subscription model. Reinstalling them on a clean OS would be too expensive for them.

The user was recording a video with screen capture application, it stopped after there was too little space.

A windows update began about an hour later which restarted the computer. It ran for maybe 2 hours with little progress before the user tried to restart the machine, but it continued anyways. Afterwards Windows couldn't successfully boot, it would restart after the windows loading screen appeared or say “BOOTMGR is missing”. If I try to boot from the E: drive by changing the bios boot settings I get the “bootmgr is missing text”.

I made a Windows 10 flash drive but didn't make any progress trying to repair the existing install.

I made a clean install of windows 10 on C: which was a spare drive I added to the computer after this started and made adjustments to the Boot Manager just to get something working for the interim.

Below is a snapshot of the Disk Manager viewed from the clean install.

Disk 1 E: is the old drive I'm trying to successfully boot and run Windows from so the user can use the old programs.

    missing bootmgr

My friends computer took a dump on him a couple times already and this time it says its missing bootmgr press ctrl alt delete to restart and it just keeps doing it over and over again. Ive tried booting off the disk and repairing it from the windows 7 disk but that didnt help it just shuts down when it says windows is starting.

    Would running chkdsk fix this??

EDIT: I am able to boot into safemode
