  1. Windows fails to detect my second HDD properly

I need help as I am experiencing what is the weirdest Windows glitch I have ever seen. Sorry for the wall of text, but you need all the context to understand what's happening.

Today, I installed a new GPU. Everything was running fine and worked perfectly, no issues. I turned off my PC for a bit.

When I came back and booted up my PC again, it gave me this error:

"reboot and select proper boot device"

This had never happened before, so I had no clue how to fix it. All I could do was access my Bios, which I noticed wasn't displaying my second hard drive in the boot priority.

After trying multiple things, nothing worked. Until I found an old Windows 7 installation disc. I used the fix startup option on it and suddenly Windows 10 boots just fine.

I thought my problems were over, but then I noticed some of my Desktop shortcuts weren't displaying right (showing a blank paper icon) so I went to check my drive.

My second HDD (EWindows fails to detect my second HDD properly :) was saying it had 500MB free space of 550MB. My drive was 1TB in size, so this wasn't right. Also, a new drive had appeared labeled F: and displayed the same thing, 500MB free space of 550MB.

Looking in either of these drives shows nothing.

Even without the HDD plugged in these two new drives remain, and no matter what it doesn't show my actual drive.

So these new E: and F: drives can't be what Windows thinks my HDD is, so what gives? How do I make it so Windows actually reads my drive correctly?

  3. second HDD not detected in windows 10

    Hi Ashwin,

Thank you for posting in Microsoft Community.

Ususally when a HDD fails to appear in windows, it's because it's not partitioned correctly.

Since you can see it in BIOS and in windows install the drive is most likely functional. If it's NOT listed in Device Manager then you probably have a bad drive, bad connection, or some other problem.

Usually when there is no drive letter assigned automatically by windows, it's because the disk is not partitioned. Open a command prompt and type in "diskpart". When the prompt changes to DISKPART> then type in "list disk". You will see all of your disks
listed there. Determine which one is the second disk and note its' drive number(Most likely it will be listed as "Disk 1"). Type "select disk 1" and then "list partition".

If no partitions are listed then you will need to partition the drive and then assign a drive letter to get it to be visible in the windows explorer. If you decide to partition the drive, make absolutely certain that you have selected the correct drive first.
You don't want to attempt to repartition your boot drive.

    Here's how you do it:

select disk 1 (assuming your second disk is listed as disk 1)

    create partition primary

    assign letter=E

As soon as you assign the drive letter the disk will appear automatically in windows explorer and you may see an autorun window appear as well. Once that happens, type "exit" , "exit" to close the command prompt window. Now you can right click the new disk
    and format and label it.

Hope this helps. Please reply to us with the status of the issue.

    Thanks.

Windows fails to detect my second HDD properly

    KB4025339 Fails Install 0x80070564

    Thanks
I am trying Eagle 51's suggestions now. Windows Update troubleshooter found a bunch of errors and fixed all but one.The update is trying to download KB4025339 again. I'll see what happens. At step one troubleshooter finishes with one error unresolved "Potential Windows Update Database Error Detected-Not Fixed". Windows update stalled at 0%.

At step 2 same troubleshooter error. The KB finished a new download failed to install.
Did step 3 KB has downloaded but fails to install.

    If Eagle's suggestion doesn't work I'll try EdTittel's suggestion

Tried bothe Eagle & Ed 's suggestions - do not work. Anyone else?

I have noticed that the latest update for my nvidia drivers has failed to update. Wondering about that!
