  1. Windows fails to shut down and restart. Also has problems with the file system-Windows Explorer

My mum was using my PC a couple days ago and when she went to shut it down it didn't ever turn off, no screen output but the fans etc was still spinning. I was away at the time so just said to switch it off from the power button as it was like this for a while. So now it still wont shut down or restart, either stays on the screen with the dots spinning around or the monitors switch off and the fans still spin. It does turn off still with holding the power button in but thats the only way.

Here is the weird part, it seems like Windows Explorer has something to do with the issue as its constantly sitting at 8% CPU usage whilst idle I have a Ryzen 3700x so this is quite a lot. So with Windows Explorer it can create new folders but wont refresh to display them automatically, I've tried in the windows registry entering to create new folders and also refresh but both are present and seem to be working. However if I restart/shut down the PC as soon as I log in there is no issues, seems to beat the windows explorer crash as such.

Im puzzled to what the issue could be now, it seems to be pointing to a complete reinstall of windows but would rather not if I can

Hope this all makes sense and thanks for the help!

    :)

    Windows 10 Tweaks

Pressing “Windows+Pause Break” (it’s up there next to scroll lock) opens the “System” Window.

Windows 10: In the new version of Windows, Explorer has a section called Quick Access. This includes your frequent folders and recent files. Explorer defaults to opening this page when you open a new window. If you’d rather open the usual This PC, with links to your drives and library folders, follow these steps:

    • Open a new Explorer window.
    • Click View in the ribbon.
    • Click Options.
    • Under General, next to “Open File Explorer to:” choose “This PC.”
    • Click OK

Windows Explorer has encountered a problem

Yep. The problem is that Windows is trying to preview the files, but for some reason, Windows can't handle some avis. The fix will get rid of the preview for all file types, tho.

Click the start button, then click run, then type:

    regsvr32 /u shmedia.dll

And hit enter. After that, you either have to restart explorer, or just restart windows.

Windows fails to shut down and restart. Also has problems with the file system-Windows Explorer

    Windows Explorer

I have Windows 7. Every time I try to open up my external HD the Windows Explorer quits working. I researched a little at this forum and "Wile E" had said

It's AVI files causing the problem. It happens when explorer tries to preview them. You can shut off previewing, and it goes away.

Open a run box, and type this:

    regsvr32 /u shmedia.dll

It will prevent Explorer from trying to preview video files.

The post was 5 years old. Does anyone know what command I would give to to shut off previewing? Thankyou
