Windows fails updating from 10240 to 10586

Hi guys, here...I'm pretty tech savvy; work at an MSP providing tech support all day. Can't solve this issue on a laptop at home though.

When updating my laptop from build 10240 to 10586, I get the following behavior depending on the method:

Windows Update - reboots but does not attempt to install update
TechBench ISO/MCT Upgrade Install - Generates the following setuperr.log

After changing my Microsoft account's email, why does Windows say that Windows is licensed to my old email?

Updating from Windows 8.1 to 10 (build 10240), I used Windows Update. However, as Microsoft is rolling out build 10586 in waves, I decided to skip ahead and use the Media Creation Tool. Updating via WU from 10240 to 10586 would just fail, as I heard Microsoft
was rolling it out in waves. And oh well, guess modifying the registry to make it look like its' registered to my new email is enough.

    Anyway, thanks for the reply!

Windows Update to Release Build 10586 fails on Small Disk Devices

I have two computers on Insider Preview Fast Ring that successfully updated to build 10586. It was suspected of being an RTM preview...

I have two other computers that were running Released Build 10240; (not on Insider Preview register). Windows Update upgraded them to 10586 over the weekend. No problems.

The problem device is a 7" Tablet with a 16GB drive. Windows Update fails with build 10586.

Windows Update successfully migrated it from Windows 8.1 Home to Windows 10 Home. I was impressed. It needed a 16GB SC card for the download and update. Drive C was wiped and repartitioned. Very smart.

Currently; Windows Update is attempting to update it from 10240 to 10586. It prompts for additional disk space - so inserted a blank 32GB microSDHC and the download succeeded on it...

Installation fails by requesting at least 5 to 7 GB free space on Drive C. The size has varied over several attempts. I have removed all programs and data from Drive C but cannot increase the free space beyond 3.4GB.

It seems that Windows Update does not contain the scripts for copying the current Windows installation to the removable drive... thus it fails to find sufficient free space on Drive C to complete the installation.

Is there an alternative download method to transition from 10240 to 10586 ?

Windows fails updating from 10240 to 10586

Hi and welcome to the forums.

A clean format install might be the way to go on this one. Backup anything you want to keep. Then install 10586 from Media Creation Tool.

I just had to do that on a Laptop I am fixing too , was stuck on .240 and would not let 318 or 420 on , even an in-place upgrade would not work ,got that annoying error message "Something went Wrong" etc etc each time.

Luckily on the backup drive they had, I had made a Windows system image taken before the Windows 8.1 to Win10 upgrade , so I applied the image and had 8.1 back , then used a fresh USB made with the Media Creator , to run setup from with in 8.1 which a least got the Owner some of his programs and pics etc back , hopefully the rest is on the WD Passport Drive. The Win10 Upgrade applied .164 , it then accepted the .420 update package applied directly (catalog file). Now just got to copy the Docs. Pics etc off the backup drive back.

  8. Windows fails updating from 10240 to 10586

I have an idea. Run the Windows Update Diagnostics!

    Here:

Step 1: Click this link to download the Windows Update Troubleshooter (No virus. I promise. It's coming straight from the microsoft website)
    http://go.microsoft.com/?linkid=9830262

Step 2: Now click on the downloaded file

Step 3: In the program that just opened, click next.

Step 4: Wait for it to detect things.

Step 5: Click the "Run Windows 10 Update Troubleshooter" Button

Step 6: Once the new window pops up, click next.

Step 7: Wait for it to detect any problems.

Step 8: Let it fix any errors found.

    I hope I helped *Smile

Then Swarfega maybe right , I was on the verge of a Clean install ,when I check the drive for images/backups but the Owner had never made any since he upgraded it to Win10 , I tried anything I could think of and some some off the Net and none of it helped.

You could revert to the Manufacturer's Image of 10 and immediately try .420 , but that would mean all their Bloatware too so a Clean install maybe better ?

  10. Why? A Clean install nearly guarantees a resolution, but it also forces users into best practices.

    What are best practices?
    • Regular backups / images, starting with a base image after a Clean install
    • Letting Windows provide drivers - you only need to visit an OEM for a driver if there is a problem. Newer doesn't always mean better. MS tests the OEM drivers on 1000s of machines - they just work 99% of the time.
      - This applies to new devices too - just plug it in and see if Windows provides the driver. If not, then download the driver from the OEM (the disc is stale and you'll most likely have to update anyway.
    • Updating old 3rd party software. People try (oftne successfully) to run Windows 98 software on modern Windows. I don't suggest it, I don't even suggest running Windows 7 software on Windows 10, unless that's the only choice and it's must have software. Given a choice, I'd rather find alternative software that I don't have to babysit.
    • Never, ever use 3rd party tweakers, boosters, automatic repair, registry enhancers, speedupYourPC software. There are some 3rd party software pkgs that are well regarded, but too much of the offerings out there are for suckers.
    • Once your favorite software is installed, run Belarc advisor to take inverotry

    That's my short list

I'd rather not wipe it because
    • There's a lot of software/DLC to re-download and reinstall
    • As an engineer, I would prefer to fix the problem rather than throw "durrr reinstall windows durrr" at it
    • There are no other issues with the machine
    • I spend most of my day troubleshooting issues like these for clients, and there are several clients that are too busy to be without their machines. It would be good to have an actual fix for this issue instead of dealing with the fallout of a clean install in the event I run into this in the future.
    • The system shipped with Windows 10, and we don't use any 3rd party bullshit. I have been working in IT for 15 years, and would consider myself a competent technician (not just "that computer kid") for probably 10 of those years; Windows should not have any problems updating from a vanilla build with no "stupid" registry changes made to it.
    • I'm sure I have more reasons, I just can't think of any right now

I have ran any/all Microsoft tools to fix this for me to no avail. I'll upload logs for anybody who wants to try and fix the issue when I have more time to work on this.

Windows 10 upgrades often fail because Windows update on the current system is stalled because of a failed upgrade, and the updates during setup of the new system timeout - because WUAUServ is called by setup in the early phases, and is busy. I think that changes to setup in RS-2 will avoid this problem, but not for 10240->10586.

There are 2 approaches - either reset windows update on the current system ( a bit pointless, because you are about to upgrade the system),
or simply turn off the network and run setup offline, turning on the network after installation to download the updates later. - you can either unplug the ethernet cable for wired systems, or disable the wireless adapter in the old system, or of course, turn off the router. You may find that your system takes a short while to update drivers and run any other Windows Updates post-setup.

If you want to do the first approach see:

With a netbook that had upgraded to Win10 , I had the same problem, the next Build would not install. It was Originally Upgraded and updated during Install via Wifi , but I had it connected via Cat5 thinking it was faster and it would not Upgrade ( .380 I think it was?) failed every time, I switched Wifi back on and disable the Ethernet and the Update immediately Ran and updated to the .420 build .

Can't explain it but it worked for that particular Computer....

  14. Your procrastination might be your saving grace ... 1607 is available.

A few other things to consider
Free space - covered in the Clean install tut)
Existing install folders (your log seems to indicate issues with C:\$WINDOWS.~BT)
System partition should be at least 450 MB
It would also be helpful if you provided technical information about your machine - we're blind here and that leads to guessing.

    • Please update the Systems Specs in your forum profile with complete information.
      • In the System Manufacturer/Model Number field, manually type Desktop or Laptop adding it to the information already in the field. The specific model number is important - there are often many models of a given series.
For example, my machine is a HP Pavilion dv6, but there are tens of the dv6 series, so dv6-6c10us is the specific model.

      • Specify Custom Build as the manufacturer if it is not an OEM machine.
The easiest way to do this is to use the information from a PUBLISHED Speccy report.
See: Speccy - Publish Snapshot of your System Specs

Post the link to the report that Speccy gives you and also open the Speccy link.
Then click here to view your System Specs on this forum.

When you have both windows open, put them side-by-side and simply copy the information, field by field, from the Speccy report to your System Specs.

To see what information other members provide in their System Specs, click on My System Specs in the lower left of any post by any member.

    • Disk Management
      • Download dmDskmgr-vg.zip (contains dmDskmgr-vg.mmc)

      • Open the compressed folder, dmDskmgr-vg.zip
Double click dmDskmgr-vg.mmc to launch it
Press the Open button if prompted Do you want to open this file?
Answer yes to the User Account Control prompt

Tip: you can drag the middle bar up to show more of the bottom pane

Windows fails updating from 10240 to 10586 [IMG]

(just don't drag it too far up - I also need the information in the top pane)
      • Press Alt+PrtScn to grab a snapshot of just the Disk Management window
Open Paint and Ctrl+V to paste it, then save the image

      • Attach the image to a new post

    Thanks for all the replies:

No luck with any of the suggestions still, but I appreciate the help. I have tried the newest ISO and still can't get the upgrade to take.

The laptop is an ASUS X555UB-NH51
    i5-6200U
    8GB DDR3 RAM
    1TB HDD
    nVidia 940M dedicated graphics card

I will get a Speccy report when I'm in front of the machine again, didn't have much time this morning and skipped on that.

I've uninstalled AV for the time being, though I am running the same version of the same software (Sophos) on my computer and it never interfered with anything. Screenshot below of the partitions - the reserved partition is very empty (plenty of space for an upgrade install). I've deleted the BT folder every time the upgrade fails.

New logs will come with the Speccy report later in the day.
