Windows 10: Windows File Explorer keeps opening randomly

I know many of us have been having these problems in a long time, and while the typical response of making sure all your drivers are updated and that you also run an SFC /scannow to fix potential systems files, I've been having this issue over and over again.


Now, I don't know if its specific Lenovo drivers for my W550s that are not ok, but even after a clean Windows 10 install, I was still having the same problems.


I ended up running a Steps Recorder session until the issue came back and finally noticed that the only thing recorded was Input from user keyboard using W + E (Win HotKey to open File Explorer). Must be related to some drivers or something, but I just can't fix it. So I went around it and disabled the specific W+E hotkey and it did the trick for me.


Obviously not fixing the core issue but at least have a workaround to get rid of the pop-ups all the time.

Here is how to disable specific Windows Hotkeys, including W+E for File Explorer

1. Click on Start, type regedit and hit enter
2. Drill-down and go to this key: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced
3. Create a new Value by right-clicking on Advanced and select New --> Expandable String Value from the context menu
   
4. Name it DisabledHotkeys
5. Add all characters of hotkeys that you don't want to disable,
   1. i.e. ER to block Win+E and Win+R from being triggered
   2. in my case just addind E here has fixed my issue for now

Windows 10 Tweaks

Windows 10: In the new version of Windows, Explorer has a section called Quick Access. This includes your frequent folders and recent files. Explorer defaults to opening this page when you open a new window. If you’d rather open the usual This PC, with links to your drives and library folders, follow these steps:

• Open a new Explorer window.
• Click View in the ribbon.
• Click Options.
• Under General, next to “Open File Explorer to:” choose “This PC.”
• Click OK

File explorer opens randomly

After a recent automatic update, Windows File Explorer opens randomly and continuously. Windows 10 OS. Any help?

I can imagine a keyboard (or programmable mouse) malfunction being behind that symptom. Try detaching your keyboard (after bringing up the OSK.exe to use with either a mouse, Touch, or pen). Note that that would only be a diagnostic step to try to isolate
the problem cause. Fixing it would then involve doing something to change how your keyboard was being used.
