I'm looking for a backup solution that would simply copy files and folders to an external drive, but it also clever enough to notice moved or removed files. For example:

    Documents\ - Notice.txt - Trash.txt
    • Backup Documents to external drive
    • Delete "Trash.txt"
    • After new backup, external drive also only consists of "Documents\Notice.txt"

Ideally, this should work incrementally, i.e. by not copying and replacing the whole folder to the external disk all the time.

Does Windows File History support this scenario?

I also read here https://www.digitalcitizen.life/file-history that apparently:

If you unplug the backup drive, File History stops using that drive, and it backs up your data to a temporary location on your C: drive.

Can this be turned off? I don't want C: to suddenly increase in disk space (it's already short on space anyways).

    File History Question

I'm not sure where to look to see if File History is finished.

I too thought it might be a time issue for OneDrive to sync. However, all files, Document and Pictures are listed under OneDrive as being synced (see previous screenshots.) So, I would not think it was a time issue to copy those files to File History.

Also, the File History cycle I mentioned has been used for weeks.

And, for no pictures to be listed I think is an issue. I should see something.

Turn on File History in Windows 10

    Thanks for the suggestions.

The turn off button was greyed out and was unresponsive.

I had been advised to run the system file checker several time and found no problems.

In the meantime my machine has been returned to the suppler for a factory reset and is working again.
