Windows 10: Windows files gone after performing a apps delete, not files!

so in the past week or so my laptop started lagging, not responding, keyboard delays so i decided to perform a reset on it, BTW its my first time doing this so yeah its kinda risky, anyway i went to the reset this pc option then i chose the keep my files option, so it will keep my personal files and delete that apps right? well that didnt happen, it took the whole night to finish *weak pc* anyway in the morning i turned it on and it was configurating, i waited a bit and then it said its ready, casually i log in just to see a black screen with the cursor, magically in the afternoon i clicked windows tab caps lock or some other combination and it showed me my desktop and it worked fine, until the part that i realise that there is nothing in my desktop , documents, download, pictures, NOTHING at all i went to C drive it had a file called windows.old there was random fiolders that had nothing in them???? what could have i done wrong, i had 100gb worth of school/work stuff in there kinda valuable to me? it said it was gonna keep my files tho?

files have gone

I MOVED a directory from one W2K PC to another. However, the target PC (which has a backup unit on it and thus the point of the move) crashed halfway through the move and I had to reboot. I then decided that I needed to sort out why the PC crashed and MOVED the directory back again.

However, in the process, most of the files have disappeared! What I don't understand is why the original files were deleted if they were not copied over.

As far as I can see, the files have gone for good. Is there any hope? Friend suggest Data Recovery Wizard, can I try that?

Those filenames, iirc, I have seen files of that naming nature made by applications created in Visual Basic in the past, & they did not tend to cleanup @ shutdown of the apps that made them.

A list of apps you run @ startup could help us help you understand which apps are creating them possibly, just so you know & then you might be able to find apps that do the same task but do not leave a mess around in your %TEMP%/%TMP% folders.

Also, providing us a list of taskmgr.exe apps via a screenshot of it isn't going to hurt either, just so you understand what may be causing that last filename (~ROMFN_000007A8 )

We're all fairly sure the performance monitoring the system does creates this one though -> Perflib_Perfdata_7a8.dat @ this point.

In any event, I would guess it's apps you run @ system startup, either from the registry RUN areas, &/or startup groups, for the first 3 filenames, mainly because your safemode booting allows you to delete the files & safemode typically doesn't run anything absolutely not necessary to system function (like registry RUN areas & startup group apps).
