Windows Hello defaults to fingerprint reader instead of camera/face

Reposting an old locked question since there is no solution yet.I have a laptop with both face and fingerprint unlock set up for Windows Hello. When I go to log in, it's correctly trying to do a face identification as soon as I wake the computer without any additional input required. However, if I need to authenticate Windows Hello for any other reason e.g. viewing saved passwords in Edge/Chrome, it defaults to the fingerprint reader and I have to manually select the camera. At that point, it's faster if I just use my fingerprint. Is there a way to make sure Windows Hello uses the camera othe

  2. Windows Hello defaults to fingerprint reader instead of camera/face

I have a laptop with both face and fingerprint unlock set up for Windows Hello. When I go to log in, it's correctly trying to do a face identification as soon as I wake the computer without any additional input required. However, if I need to authenticate Windows Hello for any other reason (e.g. viewing saved passwords in Edge), it defaults to the fingerprint reader and I have to manually select the camera. At that point, it's faster if I just use my fingerprint.

Is there a way to make sure Windows Hello uses the camera other than disabling the fingerprint unlock entirely?

  3. Windows uses Face Scan for Hello at sign in, but within Windows, Hello waits for manual input, "Scan your finger on the fingerprint reader"

I have setup Hello with PIN, fingerprints, and facial recognition (Brio 4K camera). Windows Hello works as expected to sign in to Windows, using facial recognition. However, for signing in to Hello-supported applications within Windows, like password managers, instead of just scanning my face, it pops up the Hello prompt and says, "Scan your finger on the fingerprint reader." There is a "More choices" link. If I hit that, I can select Face or PIN as additional options. If I select Face, it works fine, but that misses the point of facial recognition and it's actually faster to just swipe my finger on the fingerprint reader.

Also, if I disconnect the fingerprint scanner, then it successfully defaults to scanning my face automatically, but after it recognizes me, I click OK, then it says "Something went wrong. Please try again." But if I click OK on that, then it sails through, so there does seem to be something odd going on with Facial Recognition (or maybe it's just that it doesn't like my unplugging the USB fingerprint reader, because this error only occurs if the fingerprint scanner is unplugged, if I hit More choices and select Face as described above, there is no error message). Also, as soon as I reconnect the fingerprint scanner (sometimes I do want to use fingerprint over facial recognition), the original problem returns. It's like Hello is prioritizing the fingerprint scanner over facial recognition, but I don't see any way to change this priority.

This seems to be a new problem with Windows 11. I never had this problem under Windows 10 (but not certain this isn't coincidence). In Windows 10 running on the same hardware, it would correctly just scan my face without forcing me to click on More Choices and select Face from a list.

How do I get Hello to properly look for my face whenever there is a Hello prompt without having to manually tell it to scan my face (or at least to default/prioritize this over the fingerprint scanner)?

Windows Hello defaults to fingerprint reader instead of camera/face

We couldn't find a fingerprint scanner/camera Windows Hello

Hello, I'm experiencing some issues while trying to enable the Windows Hello login via camera and fingerprint. Basically I have this Windows 10 21H2 joined to a domain, and using administrative creds I've enabled the registry keys to enable Windows Hello and PIN login.

Unfortunately I'm not able to use the Hello camera or fingerprint despite the device is Windows Hello compatible (HP Elitebook G8). I've tried all the suggestion reported on the tutorials but still no luck, I have the error: We couldn't find a fingerprint scanner compatible with windows hello fingerprint On both camera and fingerprint. Both devices are recognized properly via devmgmt. Do you have any suggestion? Thank you!
