Windows 10: Windows Hello Not Registering Fingerprint

I have a problem with Windows Hello when I attempt to register my fingerprint on my Dell laptop after a fresh install.The first time I place my fingerprint on the scanner, Windows Hello says great and prompts me to do so again,, but the second time will always return a "something went wrong" error and I am then prompted to close Windows Hello and try again.Hardware-wise, the fingerprint scanner appears in Device Manager with no errors, Dell's hardware check says there is no problem, and when I try to use the back of my fingertip on the scanner instead of the front, Windows Hello is actually ab

Cannot Register Fingerprint in Windows hello.

We'd like to know a couple of things so that we can better address your concern. Kindly answer the following:

• Did you use a Microsoft account to sign in before you registered your fingerprint? If so, are you using the same Microsoft account right now to do the same thing?
• What was the exact error message that you got? It would be great if you can provide us a screenshot.
• Have you tried signing in with the previous fingers you registered?

If you're using the same Microsoft account to register your fingerprints and you were able to sign in with the fingers you previously registered, that means they are already registered in Windows Hello and you don't need to re-register them again (thus,
the possible error you're getting). You have the option to add multiple fingerprints or remove all fingerprints that are currently registered under your account.

Windows Hello Fingerprint issue

We understand that you are unable to use Windows Hello Fingerprint to sign in to Windows. It would be great if you can reply with the details requested below:

• When you say, “I am not getting the option to log-in into windows using fingerprint.” What login options do you see on the login screen?
  
• What happens when you try to use the Windows Hello Fingerprint scanner to login to Windows?
  
• Were you able to use the Windows Hello Fingerprint to login to Windows earlier?
  

Ideally, on the login screen, you will see Sign-in options that allows you to use different sign-in methods to login to Windows.



As you have mentioned that you are able to use the Fingerprint scanner on websites, I would suggest you to refer the steps mentioned below and see if that helps:

1. On the login screen, click on Sign-in options.
   
2. Click on the Fingerprint icon, scan the Fingerprint, and see if you are able to sign in.

If the issue persists, try removing the Fingerprint and add it again. Refer the steps mentioned below:

1. Press Windows key + I, to open
   Settings.
   
2. Click on Accounts and click on
   Sign-in options on the left pane.
   
3. Now, click on Windows Hello Fingerprint and click on
   Remove.
   
4. Follow the on-screen instructions to remove the Fingerprint.
   
5. Once done, click on Set up and follow the on-screen instructions to add the Fingerprint.

Windows Hello Fingerprint

I appreciate the efforts taken by you in resolving the issue. I understand that you are unable to setup Windows
Hello Fingerprint on your computer. I’ll certainly assist you with the issue.



However, please let us know the version of Windows 10 installed on the computer. To check type:
winver in the search bar on the Taskbar and hit
Enter.



Meanwhile, let us try a couple of troubleshooting steps and see if that helps.



Rest Windows Hello Biometric Database:



You can try resetting the Windows Hello Biometric Database and check if that helps. Please follow the steps mentioned below:

1. 
   Press Windows key + R, to open Run dialog box.
   
2. 
   Type services.msc and click on OK.
   
3. 
   Look for Windows Biometric Service, double click on it and click on Stop.
   
4. 
   Now, go to C:\Windows\System32\WinBioDatabase, take a backup of all the files inside the WinBioDatabase folder.
   
5. 
   After taking a backup of the files, delete all the files.
   
6. 
   Now, open Services by following step 1 and 2, and restart the Windows Biometric Service.
   
7. 
   Go to Start >> Settings >> Accounts >> Sign-in options and register the Face data again.
