Windows 10: Windows help file display panel blank after Win 10 upgrade

This problem I have is with any app/program and the need to access the help file.


The typical help file window has a left side panel with a "contents" tree and the right side panel displays the selected information of the left panel selection. In my case the right side panel is blank no matter what is selected in the "contents" panel.


Several years ago this same problem showed up in Win 7 with Internet Explorer, IE, perhaps an update taking IE up to version 9 or higher. After updating to the latest IE, the help file blank panel issue occurred. I searched for a long time to find a post that solved the problem by going back to IE7 or IE8. That was the only solution that worked versus any registry mods or command prompt actions.


I have upgraded my Win 7 operating system to Win 10 and the blank help file panel issue has returned. There are posts indicating a checkbox in the "Properties" dialog of the help file to "Unblock" the help file. That checkbox does not exist. I have tried all of the suggested registry file mods and command prompt actions - none of them work.


Below is a sample of what I get with any help file. The help files have the .chm extension.


You can open the .chm with an external utility, but there are application integration issues that make it very clunky and time consuming to use versus having the help file work correctly.




I have seen posts that suggest there are ActiveX controls that are part of the problem, but nothing that leads to a solution.


I did look into removal of the IE11 that exists among Win10 "features", but could not find anything to remove related to IE.


I have one other related issue with the latest version, 2020, of Quicken and the invoice designer. The designer utility is blank. Spent a couple of hours with Quicken tech support and they could not solve it. Seems to be related.


Is there any solution other that a complete reformatting of the system and reinstalling Win10?

Control Panel Is Blank

For issue with blank Control Panel, I suggest you to run System File Checker (SFC Scan) as this could be an issue with corrupt system files.

System File Checker is a utility in Microsoft Windows that allows users to scan for and restore corruptions in Windows system files

Perform System File Check (SFC), and then check if this fixes the issue.

Follow the steps:

• Press Windows Key + X.
• Click on Command prompt (Admin).
• In Command prompt, type ‘sfc /scannow’ without quotes and hit
  enter.

Windows 10 upgrade problem, no input accepted

I really hate having to come here and ask for help, but I really am stumped. It hurts my geek pride. I have a PC with fairly modern hardware in it. It has a p8p67 pro in it. I have tried upgrading windows 10 on it twice now. Both times I have had the same result.

After windows finishes upgrading it goes to the log in/set up screen. I can't do anything. No keyboard or mouse input is accepted.

I will list some, or hopefully all, of the troubleshooting steps I have tried:

• Move keyboard and mouse to different USB ports.
• Try different keyboard or mouse.
• Restart computer, repeatedly.
• Google for related issues.
• Update Bios, because why not.
• Create boot media and revert to windows 7.

The windows 10 system restore boot media works fine with keyboard and mouse. All USB ports work in windows 7. I don't know what is wrong. I suspect that windows 10 is lacking a driver of some sort, but since the computer accepts no input I have no way of checking for which driver let alone installing it.

Please help me figure this out. If I have to revert back to windows 7 again, I am not going to get it upgraded to windows 10. Thank you in advanced.

Pressing “Windows+Pause Break” (it’s up there next to scroll lock) opens the “System” Window.

Windows 10: In the new version of Windows, Explorer has a section called Quick Access. This includes your frequent folders and recent files. Explorer defaults to opening this page when you open a new window. If you’d rather open the usual This PC, with links to your drives and library folders, follow these steps:

• Open a new Explorer window.
• Click View in the ribbon.
• Click Options.
• Under General, next to “Open File Explorer to:” choose “This PC.”
• Click OK
