Windows ignores my redesignation of the system disk

Some time ago I added an SSD to my Lenovo desktop with the intention of making it my system disk and redesignating the existing HDD as additional storage. I left the HDD where it was installed by the factory and installed the SSD in a vacant slot. I then used disk manager to designate that disk F is now the system disk, and that disk C is no longer the system disk but is "work" file. Subsequently I decided that I would use the HDD as my Macrium backup file. I don't use OneDrive which I have immobilized. Windows seems to prefer to use disk C as the system disk even though I have redefin

    Can't safely remove external disk

In reference to the steps of your suggestions:

    • The issue is specific to the particular disk and it started after I've used the disk to save the System image backup (created with the Control Panel > File History tool).
    • I didn't disable any windows Service. I'm just wondering if there is any to disable.
    • Safe boot with networking, or clean boot doesn't resolve the issue.

    Thank you.

Remove spare hard disk as system disk

    Thank you for your reply.

There's a possibility that your HDD was detected as OS drive during the Windows installation. To remove your HDD as system disk, we suggest reformatting it. To do so, please follow the steps below:

    • Open Disk Management.
    • Right-click on your HDD, then select Format.
    • On the Format windows, type your preferred Volume label,
      File system (NTFS is recommended)
, Allocation unit size (leave as Default).
    • Check the Perform a quick format option, then click
      OK
      .

Note: Please back up your files before reformatting the drive.

Feel free to post back should you need further help.

Non-system disk or disk error in Windows 10

    Hi Aixa,

The Non-system disk or disk error usually occurs when the
computer is unable to find an operating system on any of the storage devices. When this happens, the computer won't be able to load your
Windows operating system. To determine what's causing this issue, we'd like to ask a few questions:

    • Have you made any recent changes to your computer?
    • What is the make and model of your device?
    • What steps have you done so far to resolve your concern?

We're looking forward to your response.
