Windows 10: Windows Immediately Forgets Default Apps

Running Windows 10 Pro, Version 2004, OS Build 19041.208


Hello, I am having a problem beginning today that suddenly Windows will immediately forget whatever default app I have chosen to open some files.

This behavior is not consistent for every file type. It seems that I can assign the default apps to open files like JPGs and PNGs, Adobe Ai and Ps files, MP3s, and .txt files. But I cannot set the default app for ANY MS Office files .docx, pptx, etc., nor can I set video files to open with VLC though they work with the Photos App.


I have tried running sfc /scannow and DISM to fix this, but to no avail for what it's worth, it seems I am also unable to run either CMD or Powershell as admin, so I ran these in safe mode -- not sure if that's connected.


I'm not sure what else I can do, any help is greatly appreciated!

Windows 10 forgets default apps

I have noticed like not 5mins ago that Winamp just got kicked out of my default apps list in Windows 10 Pro.
I installed this installation not max 3 weeks ago with fresh downloaded Windows 10 Pro using Microsoft Media Creation Tool, is there a way to fix this bcs I using sfc /scannow don't do a lot for me and I have run it before on this installation.

Before u ask, I have fully updated my Windows 10 with all non-insider/beta updates.

The only thing I have disabled is the uac prompt that popup when u need admin for applications to run bcs it's simply annoying.

I don't remember having all these problems with Windows 8.1 Pro when i was using that and I am really thinking about going back so I can have "fully control" over Windows again with like disabling all the admin crap bcs I feel like it's messing more up and makes things less useful in Windows 10 with all these small problems I have and I read a lot of ppl having problems with various things time and time again where they needed to reinstall Win10 over and over to get it to work fully.

Any advice on how I can get Windows 10 to just work as a "daily driver" without all these small annoying things? *Frown

 

Lost default photo viewer after profile rebuild

Thanks Brink. I've tried those steps before i started searching Google. After the profile rebuild i don't have the Photo app listed to choose to make it default in either the system settings for default apps or the Open With option.

I can't even find it doing a search. Seems to have been removed somehow with the profile rebuild, which doesn't make sense.

Might be helpful to list what i've done I've done the open with check, the choose default program in the system menu, tried that in device manager default programs also. I've checked the programs and features Turn windows features on/off and it's not listed there (never thought it was but that was a suggestion), searched the MS Store, it's not listed there either.

I don't like playing in the registry unless i have defined steps and haven't found anything for this yet, just the Win7 version like in my OP.
