Windows 10: Windows Installer on restart

In the last couple of weeks, when I reboot the system there is a popup message "Windows Installer, Preparing to Install". The only option is to "Cancel". If I wait about 3 seconds it disappears, but on the next reboot it returns. Any ideas on what may be causing this behavior?

In response to your email inquiry. NO, THIS IS NOT RESOLVED. After about thirty tries, using all the suggestions from this site over and over with slight tweaks, I have given up. Windows 10 may turn out to be worth the hassle for some folks, but I have no
more time to spend baby-sitting it.

Two points may help someone else:

FIRST, THIS EXACT SAME ERROR OCCURRED OVER AND OVER FOR MANY USERS TWO YEARS AGO when trying to upgrade Win 7 or Win 8 to Win 8.1. The responses here, regarding Win10, are verbatim the answers then, namely, 1900101-40017 is due to drivers, especially Nvidia
or USB, do clean boot, update drivers, ad nauseum. I wonder why Microsoft, with all its clout, has not tesolved this in over two years? SECOND, BY DISABLING ALMOST ALL THE DEVICES BEFORE INSTALL, I was able to get an installed version of Win10 with a activation
id, by unchecking "keep my features and settings" . Unfortunately, the network devices were disabled (not by me), so there was no way to get the registered license activated. This was the last straw. At least the rollback worked out ok, so I am cutting my
losses and getting out.

OK, so I ran into the same exact problem again. The Windows 10 installation aborts at 71% (91% features and drivers). Since my last note, I have

set up for clean boot

at command prompt, run MAXCLEAN as explained in the recommended notes

confirmed that I am not on a domain

disabled the video card

disabled wireless printer devices

ran the Windows Update Troubleshooter and took actions recommended

I am using the Windows Update method, so I assume it is attempting 64 bit since that is what this computer and this version of windows are already set to

I have always kept the windows updates up to date, but I don't know how to determine if Update 1 for Win 8.1 is installed. I did not check Setup.exe to see if compatibility mode is off. I did not confirm that no language packs are installed (I don't recall
installing any). My virus checker and firewall are disabled, but not uninstalled. I don't like that option, but I will do it if you insist. It is the newest version of Internet Security from Bitdefender.

I noticed a phase of the installation that was not run in previous attempts, "Configuring Update for Windows 10.

The online Chat help from MS was very helpful and four times offered to install remotely with the remote tool. They had the same problem - the install crashed at exactly the same spot. It would be nice to have a log that could help determine what is happening
at 71%/91%.

I am feeling very helpless at this point. I have worked in IT my entire career, and have been using Windows since Windows 3.1. This is by far the most difficult and disconcerting issue I have faced. I need help, so please respond and let me know if there
are any other steps I can take to get Win10. I think I want Win10, but it is now starting to look like it is not a cost-effective option for me. (The only store near here that can install for me is at least an hour away, so using that option will cost me a
day too).

If I should try by downloading the setup file, then please let me know that too. \

Sounds like Virus or malware behavior. Check your system for viruses, use Malwarebytes and NOD32.

You can also check your Startup in Task Manager, and also most important, check your Task Scheduler. If you don't see the reason in those, then it most probably is a virus. Both Eset and Malwarebytes have a trial period.

 

I realize I haven't posted in this forum very often, but I am familiar with keeping my system clean. There is no detection of any malware or virus by 5 different vendors software. I have looked at all the entries in "Autoruns" from "Systinternals", now part of MS, and nothing appears to out of the ordinary.

I appreciate your suggestions and should have mentioned some of the steps I have already tried.
