Every time I think I've seen it all in Windows 10, something new and incredibly frustrating happens.

When I plug in a usb storage device, if there's already a usb storage device plugged in, both devices drop out. When I try to go to Disk Management, it states that I "do not have access rights to Logical Disk Manager," even though I'm a local admin on the machine. And here's the reason why: MY LOCAL PROFILE IS GETTING DELETED. I have to log into the local admin account to restore my profile and privileges.

Also, if I reboot with either device still plugged in, it tries to run System Repair rather than booting into the OS; I think it's trying to boot into the external storage device, even though it is not set to do so in the boot config.

I tested all of the USB ports (3.0 & 2.0) on the problematic PC and encounter the same issues.. I also tested these same storage devices on another PC with no issues.

I ran a malware scan to be on the safe side but it came back clean.

I'm on the latest public build (1909).

Also, please don't suggest a reformat. That can't be the answer every time I encounter an issue like this. I would be reformatting monthly.

Windows 10 showing USB storage device that does not exist

Again, thank you very much for your reply and trying to help me.

I did exactly as you suggested. Entered registry editor and deleted those 2 entries you listed. After that, i restarted my PC.

Everything is the same, the drive is still showing. It appears on the device manager list as "Generic STORAGE DEVICE USB Device".

Any kind of information you need me to provide, just ask.

  3. VMware-usb storage device not recognized

    Hello,

I'm running Windows XP in Workstation Player on a Windows 10 laptop.

My USB CD/DVD drive is able to mount in the Player. So is a flash drive.

My Western Digital ssd (My Passport Ultra) is listed in "Removable devices", but fails to mount, giving this error:

Windows is deleting my local profile & USB storage devices drop out when multiples are... [IMG]

In the Virtual Machine settings, the USB controller is using usb 2.0.

The WD ssd is compatible with usb 3.0 and 2.0, and is supported by Windows XP. My desktop computer running Win XP has no problem mounting the drive.

The device manager in virtual Win XP shows it as an "unknown device."

I've read everything I can find on the problem, and tried a number of suggestions from the knowledge base at VMware as well as solutions via google searches.

Perhaps the WD ssd just won't work on the free version of VM Workstation Player (v. 14).

    Anyone have any suggestions?

    Thanks,
    Paul

Update to increase the maximum transfer size of USB storage devices in Windows 7...

This is an Microsoft Windows 7 or Server 2008 R2 update that may improve performance of USB transfers. Now they do say, "for some":
    How? Well per Microsoft:
Now, you do need to read the Hotfix article, here > An update to increase the maximum transfer size of USB storage devices in Windows 7 or in Windows Server 2008 R2

Now, after you apply this hotfix, you will need to do some registry editing.
So, back up your registry before proceeding. And, also, you do this at your own risk; as always... anything can go wrong at anytime, even in the most perfect circumstances.

This registry edit is, also, covered in the hotfix:

After you install this update, to increase the maximum transfer size of USB storage devices, follow these steps:
‪1.‬Click Start, type regedit in the Start Search box, and then press Enter.
‪2.‬Locate and then click the following registry subkey:
    ‪3.‬HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\usbstor\VVVV PPPP
‪4.‬Click Edit, point to New, and then click DWORDValue.
‪5.‬Type MaximumTransferLength, and then press Enter.
‪6.‬Click Edit, and then click Modify.
‪7.‬In the Value data box, type a value to specify the maximum transfer size between 64KB and 2MB. For example, you select Decimal and type a value between 65535 (64K) and 2097120 (2M).
    ‪8.‬Exit Registry Editor.

    Notes
VVVV represents device descriptor idVendor in hexadecimal.
PPPP represents device descriptor idProduct in hexadecimal.

To get this update, you will need to click the "View and Request Hotfix Downloads" at the top portion of the page. Follow the instructions, like, fill out the info and check the files you want to download. They will send an email to with the links.

Happy updating and may it improve your USB storage device's performance. *Smile Windows is deleting my local profile & USB storage devices drop out when multiples are... :)
