Windows is taking very long to boot to login screen

I disconnected Cortana yesterday. But when I started PC this morning, the system still made those 20 attempts spanning 100 minutes!

Have you successfully run SFC /SCANNOW?
    Have you tried uninstalling KB3156421?

Yes, I ran SFC and got this message at the end of it: "Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations."

I stated in an earlier mail that KB3156421 got installed on May 13, whereas my problem started around start of May. So I ruled it out as a source of my problem. Do you think I should still try to remove it?

Yes, I know you said that. Still, I can't help thinking that maybe this update, which has known similar issues, might somehow be exacerbating things, or preventing a resolution.

Have you tried a repair install using an in-place upgrade? That may be the next step.

Thanks for all the time you and Dalchina spent to find a solution to my problem. Unfortunately, in spite of all attempts, the problem refused to go away!

While searching for a solution on the web, I came across a fellow sufferer's very recent suggestion at answers.microsoft.com. Following the tip, I installed the free version of Windows Repair Tool from tweak.com. Ran this tool and followed the on-screen guides step by step. It took nearly 5 hours to complete and then repeat as suggested by the program. But it was worth it as my problem vanished and this morning, my start up process took only about 1 minute against the earlier 100 minutes!

Did the repair tool leave a log showing what it actually did ? , it would be useful to see what the issue actually was.

A correction: Windows Repair Tool is available at tweaking.com and NOT tweak.com. Regret the error.

OK, I found it. There are four logs:
    - log for initial repair (947 KB)
    - log for repeat repair (987 KB)
    - chkdsk full log (84 KB)
    - chkdsk log (5 KB)
The last two were done as optional steps.

If you want to see the log(s), how do I send those?

Windows is taking very long to boot to login screen

May be because I pruned my Startup programs.

Nearly two years have passed since my first posting and I considered my issue as closed!

In this time, my OS has progressed to Windows 10 Professional (x64) Version 1709 (build 16299.334). In the period from June 20, 2016 till date, as per Belarc Advisor, Windows Update has incorporated 126 hotfixes on my laptop covering Windows 10/Office & OneNote 2010. I've no outstanding problem as of now and the start up time from pressing the power button to appearance of desktop screen is about 30-35 seconds.
