Windows 10: Windows is up to date, but I don't have the Anniversary Update

I was talking with my friend and she told me to up update my laptop to the the Anniversary update. But, when I go into my update settings, it tells me that Windows is up to date, and I can confirm that I don't already have the Anniversary update. I did perform the "check for updates" option but it still came with the same result.

I tried searching online but there was no luck. Hoping an expert could help me solve why my laptop is not letting be update.

I did every troubleshooter and a lot of things got fixed that i didn't know needed fixing but i still don't have my audio

icon and cannot get it. If this is just a bug for me I'm okay with that because everything runs fine just the task bar takes a

little longer to load, again I'm fine if that is the only little problem.

I think Microsoft were gradually upgrading computers in phases, rather than all at once, so perhaps they haven't enabled yours yet. That said, they were supposed to be doing new hardware, and I notice my really old laptop (upgraded all the way from XP bit-by-bit) updated itself when I switched it on this week.

Step 4 links to the Microsoft website which contains a link to start the upgrade; alternatively you can download the ISO installer using later steps in that tutorial.

A word of caution - if Microsoft haven't enabled your machine yet, there may be good reason.
If you want to upgrade yourself I would take the opportunity to make a backup image (I use Macrium Reflect but other tools are available) before starting an upgrade.

You should still be getting security patches and updates and if I'm honest there isn't much in the Anniversary Update which makes it a 'must have' for me, so the other option is to wait a little longer.

 

Type "winver" in Search/Cortana. If the output shows "Version 1607" you have the Anniversary Update. If it shows 1511 then you do not. You can download the Anniversary Update, create an .iso, and update yourself if you want. If you haven't gotten the Anniversary Update via Windows Update by now you never will.

 

If winver shows neither, you're on the original version 10240. But all three versions are considered to be up to date if they have the latest security patches. The monthly cumulative updates are released simultaneously for each of the three versions. 1607 and 1511 were features updates, you can still be said to be completely up to date and secure without the benefit of the new features.

Yes, but the user would have to be on the Current Business Branch to be up to date with 1511 and the Long Term Servicing Branch to be up to date on 10240. A consumer would not be on either without knowing it.

 

In Pro you can defer features updates. This is achieved by switching you to the CBB.

But, that's not the only way to stay on 1511. Hiding the AU using Microsoft's wushowhide tool would stay on 1511, but you'd still be on the CB. There are still posters saying 'I don't see the AU yet' (most likely because the phased rollout hasn't got round to them yet) - they too are still on the CB. In either case a check for updates would say windows is up to date.
