Windows 10: Windows January 28 update stuck at 98%

My Windows 10 Insider Preview update got stuck at 98%, and seems to be caught betwixt and between. I let it try for a couple of days unmolested, but finally had to turn it off at the switch. Then I started in advanced mode


When I try to boot into safe mode, I get a "Windows cannot be installed in safe mode" message.


If I boot to the command prompt, the D: directory is my expected Windows installation, but has no "name" Normally it says, "Windows". Listing the directory in the Command Prompt mode from the advanced startup seems to have all the files in place that I would expect, and the disk usage amount looks correct


The C: directory shows no actual files.


The Command prompt boots to X:\


Automatic repair won't function.


I know for a fact that there are restore points, but advanced startup says there are none


I know that there are updates that could be removed, but advanced startup says there are none of any kind


diskpart shows that the C:\ is marked as active, and the D: has no name, and isn't marked at all.


It looks like at some point, the installation got stuck before it actually completed, so I am getting the spinning disk, which I did let run for a couple of days just in case.

Any clue, or recommended course of action?


Thanks in advance. I solved the last crisis of this kind by cloning my old working installation, and since I have backed up the partitions already though the volumes are all whackadoodle the things I care about, like documents and so forth, are recoverable.

Windows 98 and ME no longer updatable...

Quite right, XP is still listed in technet. Win 98 unfortunately isn't. Windows 3.1 and 3.2 are listed though.

why not try to use virtual PC and emulate windows 98 on a XP machine or did someone already suggest that?

You can still get everything you need to make a Windows 95, 98 computer compatible with Windows 7 computers on a network and even in an AD domain (although the confguration is harder due to there not being any wizards and such).

My suggestion would be that as you find each patch you need, put them on a CD (and give the files names you can understand) so that in the future you will have a compilation of the updates in the event you want to build another legacy machine in the future.
