Don't need the references to the data, a good recovery suit will scan the raw disc itself to see if any data can be reconstructed.

You are confusing two issues, the example you link to is a permissions error with one system OS level event (chkdsk win10) trying to modify another system level's main OS drive (win 7) , the user did not loose the data just access to it, which was restored.

The Unknown account is your old win8.1 SID as @Samuria posted above, it is machine & user & OS dependent (not just account), if this (user) really was the cause, every time someone used a usb drive to transfer data between computers the second computer would chkdsk and wipe the drives data, which i am sure the internet would of exploded about.

Yours is a data corruption issue that has nothing to do with SID's. You have access to the drive and data, but it was returning errors.

The lesson as always stated is have a backup plan for any data you do not want to loose and make sure it is updated on a regular basis.

    Thank you aramil,

Immediately after, I have seen that in Explorer and I knew at once I had problems, I tried to run "Scan and Fix" the Drive became as if it was unformated with "Access Denied" as with the other user.
It means the "Onwership" has been changed, why? Why it changed so that it Blocking the access?

Well, Data Corruption, no HDD Defective, who is the Culprit? And a Repair that was not able to Retrieve Data.
It might be, that First NTFS table was bad, but the Second NTFS Table was Worst. So far I recall, it was retrieving files that I deleted one Year ago and for sure, the Data has been overwritten several times, so the recovered Files are garbage.
I think everything is scrambled in HDD, so I have no chance to retrieve Files. I will not spent 100 bucks to get Garbage back.
    This is a Super MCA.

This HDD was a Backup HDD and I was using it seldom. I have to think well about Security of my Data , if every time I connect a Drive it gets corrupted, I do better buy 1000 HDD, connect them once and never again, just because.

This happened yesterday, I was so Down and Depressive, I stop working, I had no Head to think not even come here and expose the situation, I am still down, disappointed with all Modern Computing that in Seconds you can lose all data.
Why did I Upgrade, is the question I am doing now?

  3. The ownership ussue for external drives is a red herring.
The owner of root volumes (\) should be TRUSTED INSTALLER or SYSTEM, files and folders under the root can be any authenticated user.

Ownership of the drive caused UAC to ask for permission or denied access completely.
Ownership was not the cause of bad sectors.

To recover your data, you might try
    MiniTool Free Partition Manager
How to Make Partition Recovery Tutorial-- OR --
MiniTool Partition Recovery Tool | Free Software Solution
    Read the instructions carefully.

I'd like to see your Disk Management

    • Download dmDskmgr-vg.zip (contains dmDskmgr-vg.mmc)

    • Open the compressed folder, dmDskmgr-vg.zip
Double click dmDskmgr-vg.mmc to launch it
Press the Open button if prompted Do you want to open this file?
Answer yes to the User Account Control prompt
    • Press Alt+PrtScn to grab a snapshot of just the Disk Management window
Open Paint and Ctrl+V to paste it, then save the image

    • Attach the image to a new post
Tip: you can drag the middle bar up
to show more of the bottom pane

(just don't drag it too far up
    - I also need the information in the top pane)
    Thanks

Windows just Trashed 1TB data External HDD

    Hi Slatybart,
Thank you for the Links, I will try them.
I can not imagine that there is something wrong with HDD, so I am tending something went wrong with Security/Ownership.
Anyway I am not expertise on new Windows Features, but I have long experience with PC.

About Disk Management, I just formatted the Partition where Upgrade Win 10 was, now I am restoring Win 8.1 from an older System Image.
Is it enough to open native Windows Disk Management? Or do I need to use the one you said?
I have 2 PC, you mainly want to see the "bad" HDD or the Whole system of the PC where Win 10 was installed?
    Thank you.

  5. The disk management in the zip file is just a modified console - it formats the columns and provides an average split

If you make certain that the columns and panes show the most information - sure, disk management on your machine can be used.

If the screen shot you post does not show the information needed, I will not ask for another screen shot.

Show me all drives that concern you (I'm more interested in the bad HDD) but it is useful to see a machine as a whole when issues arise.

With a Google search on "ownership hdd" I came to the ref:
    https://www.tenforums.com/tutorials/3...dows-10-a.html
    See also the comments.
The idea is to startup the PC with a Linux (Ubuntu) CD and see whether you have access to the HDD. Linux ignores ownership and security settings; for further details see the link. As a last resort, you may give it a try.

    Thanks,

Disk# 1 - how is it currently initialized?
    MBR
    GPT

You can use Disk management to tell.
    Click on the View menu
    Expand Bottom
    Select Disk List

You don't have to post a screen shot, just identify the drive and Partition Style
    Disk# 0 - GPT
    Disk# 1 - ??? ..... probably GPT

    Hi,
    Disk 0 = GPT
Disk 1 =MBR. This Disk is a normal internal 2,5" Disk that I a put it in a external case. I bought new along with the case and just used it on USB 3.0 Ports.

  10. See what Minitool Partition Wizard (PW) - Partition Recovery tells you
    see Post# 16

Changes to the drive require you to press Apply (upper left)
-> If you are not sure, do not press apply. You can cancel the pending operations.

Post screen shots so members can see what you see.
    Main screen
    Quick scan results

If you see the partition(s) that were on the drive, try the PW Explore Partition
    [screenshot]

You might have to run the long scan - not sure until the quick scan results

I have currently normal access to the HDD. There are several files that were recovered by CHKDSK and others are just there. I lost 3 VM´s and 1 System image and some other files but I have copies of these ones, but not of the VM´s.
I do not need to recover Partition, I need recover Data.
To recover Data I need the Minitool Data Recovery and I have to Pay for it.
I am convinced that all Data is scrambled on Disk so I am afraid it will be waste of money and time.
If you have another suggestion, I will great full, otherwise I will erase, Zeroing Sectors and reinitialize the Drive, there is still in some folders "Access Denied" messages and Windows 8.1 was complaining that Recycling Bin of it was corrupted.
That was something severe happening to FS of the Drive.

I am still concerned about what leaded to the Data lost, I want to figure out what happened because I want to avoid it happens again.
My thoughts are, there is nothing wrong with hardware of the HDD (it is marked as Healthy) and the crucial step was when I run "Scan and Fix" that was changing the Drive from "normal access" to "Access Denied" and it showed simultaneously in Explorer as "Unformatted".
    What could have happened?

I found on the HDD a recovered Folder from CHKDSK with deleted information , I think, about several "Owners" of the Drive.
Can it be that, some how, the Owner information has been corrupted / Deleted , that made the System lost the Control of the HDD and because of that changed it to the "Access Denied" state ?
