Windows 10: Windows Key/Search Bar Not Working

I use a Dell XPS 15 9510, and a couple of days ago the Windows key stopped working properly. The main issue is that I can't access the windows search bar anymore. When I hit the Windows key to open it up please see attached picture it defaults to a white selector box around apps, and when I try to type the selector just gets moved up and down or left and right from app to app. When I use the cursor to click inside the top or bottom search bars shown in the picture, the white selector box around the apps disappears but I still can't type in either search bars. I am also having difficulties with the "search the web and Windows" bar next to the windows start button, your solution here "
I suggest you try rebuilding the index and check if issue is resolved. To rebuild all the index, kindly follow the below given steps:

• Press Windows key, type Indexing and hit enter.
• Click on Advanced button.
• Click Rebuild under Troubleshooting section and click OK.
• Try searching and see if issue is fixed." WILL NOT WORK as when I type in that search bar all I get is an empty white box.

 

Search Bar/Cortana

From the description, I understand that you are still receiving the pop up notifications, despite having disabled the search functionality in windows 10.

Steps to disable the Search Bar

• Right click on the task bar.
• Select the "Search" option.
• Select "Disable."

However, if the above steps don't work out, perform the below suggested steps and check if it helps to resolve the issue.

Open a CMD window started as Administrator.

Repair corruption: Dism /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth.

Run this command next: Sfc /scannow

Now run these two commands:

PowerShell -ExecutionPolicy Unrestricted

Get-AppXPackage -AllUsers |Where-Object {$_.InstallLocation -like "*SystemApps*"} | Foreach {Add-AppxPackage -DisableDevelopmentMode -Register "$($_.InstallLocation)\AppXManifest.xml"}

Search option is not working properly in Windows 10

I suggest you to follow the steps below and check if it helps.

Step 1: Restart the Service and check if it helps.

  Press Windows key + R.
  
• 
  Type Services.msc In the search box.

  Select Windows Search.
  
• 
  Restart the services and set the service as Automatic.
  

Step 2: Run the
Search and Indexing troubleshooter.

Follow the steps below and check if it helps.

• 
  Press Windows key +X, select Control panel.
  
• 
  Change the view by option on the top right to
  Large icons.
  
• 
  Click on troubleshooting and click on the
  view all option on the left panel.
  
• 
  Run the Search and Indexing
  troubleshooter.
