Windows 10: Windows licence key transfer from a dead pc to a new.

Hello, ı have bought windows 8 pro Licence key at past and around 1 year later I have free upgraded it to windows 10. Now, that desktop computer has a severe problem with motherboard and not even starting. So that ı cannot reach windows to unregister the license key. Now I am buying a new computer with freedos op system and want to install windows via using my old licence key. How can i do that wihtout reaching old windows to unregister? And the other question, shall i install windows 8 or 10? i have only windows 8 licence key

Transfer Windows 10 Licence from Old/Dead Computer to New Computer

Depends on the licence you have. How did you get your Windows 10 licence, was it via the free upgrade and was the previous system installed by the manufacturer = OEM.

OEM licences cannot be transferred, generally but recent posts suggest MS is allowing some transfers.

Retail boxed licence can be transferred to a new device.

New motherboard = new device.

 

How to transfer a Windows 10 digital licence from a dead PC to a newly installed PC?

The Windows 10 Pro installation on the dead PC was a free upgrade from probably Windows 8.1. At that time, Microsoft's web site said the free upgrades were full licences and were transferable. The dead PC was last used around 6 years ago.

 

Win10Pro transfer to new PC

I bought a PC with Win7Pro already installed (the sticker refers to OEM). This was updated to Win10Pro. The motherboard on this PC has now died and I need to purchase another. Most come with Win10Home and I would wish to transfer the licence from the dead
PC to the new one. Unfortunately, I do not have a Win10Pro licence key to hand (or access to it as the PC is dead). I do have the original disc and the key for the Win7Pro. I cannot find a straightforward answer as to whether I can upgrade a Win10Home installation
to Win10Pro using the Win7Pro key. Please advise.
