Windows 10: Windows Licensing Question for refurbished computers

I'm working with a nonprofit that refurbishes old computers to provide to veterans/disabled/low income for free. The question is if we receive a computer that was licensed and has the COA and an embedded license key, do we still need to purchase a new Windows license assuming we're staying with the same version e.g. Win 10 Home? The refurbishing process is usually limited to wiping the drive and a fresh Windows installation with addition of open source applications. There is no charge to the end users that are given the computers.

Refurbished computer new OEM license.

Hi all,

I received a refurbished computer, but it came without a Windows license.

Is it legal to buy an OEM license and activate it on a refurbished computer or are OEM only for newly bought computers?

Is there any site or document with this information?

I have a concern about windows 10 license and activation.

Maybe the first question to ask would be why does it require Windows 10 Pro? Why is Windows 10 Home not sufficient? If the goal is only to get an SSD into the refurbished laptop, then why not just move the SSD over and, as you suggest, do a clean install of Windows 10 Home? 1. Create a USB flash drive of Windows 10 using Microsoft's Media Creation Tool, I recommend a 16 GB or 32 GB flash drive: https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/soft...load/windows10 2. Create a folder on the flash drive created in step 1 above and export the existing refurbished laptop drivers to that folder: Backup and Restore Device Drivers in Windows 10 3. Replace the hard drive in the refurbished laptop with the SSD. 4. Boot the refurbished laptop from the USB flash drive created in step 1 and perform a clean install of Windows 10 Home. 5. After Windows 10 Home is installed, re-install drivers from the USB flash drive for any hardware in device manager that is missing drivers. If you re-install Windows 10 Home, there will be no activation issues - it will activate using the already existing digital license for Windows 10 Home for the refurbished laptop. If you put Windows 10 Pro onto the refurbished laptop - either with a clean install or by moving from another computer, you will have to manually activate it to establish the digital license for Windows 10 Pro for the refurbished laptop.

 

Recovery of Windows 10 with Refurbisher License key

I have an HP computer with Windows 10 Pro, 64-bit with a Refurbisher license key.

It took over 3 hours to configure the computer.

I have an image backup of the computer and want to restore it onto a newer and faster Dell computer.

According to Microsoft support, I have to reinstall all the apps and reconfigure the apps on the Dell because the license key on the HP was a Refurbisher licence key. I can't use the Windows 10 Pro license that came with the Dell, or purchase another Win
10 Pro license key.

How do other companies deal with disaster recovery or hardware upgrades with Windows 10?
