Windows 10: Windows lock screen unresponsive

When I leave my PC I lock it with Windows Key + L. Then, when I come back, I tap a key on my keyboard to resume display output. My computer is not set to go to sleep, but the display turns off when it is locked. The screen turns on to show the lock screen. I can move my mouse cursor, but no matter what I do, the lock screen does not respond to mouse clicks or keyboard presses and I cannot get past the lock screen to the login screen. When I forcefully shut off my computer by holding the power button and restart it, the problem goes away for a period of time several days. However, this is the fourth time this has happened in the past month. I do not like to forcefully reset my computer because it does not give it the opportunity to shut down gracefully, and sometimes I lose work. How can I solve this problem for good?


I regularly update my PC.


By "lock screen" I mean the screen that displays the time and Windows Spotlight. By "login screen" I mean the field that shows your username and allows you to enter your pin.

I suggest you to follow the steps below to set the lock screen option as Windows Spotlight and check if it helps.

1. Right click on Desktop screen.

2. Then click on Personalize.

3. Click on Lock Screen.

4. Try to select Windows Spotlight from the list.

Windows Spotlight on the lock screen

There are multiple causes on why you're encountering this issue. To further troubleshoot the issue, we suggest that you disable and re-enable Spotlight. Simply follow the steps below:

• Right-click on the desktop and open Personalize.
• Open Lock Screen tab.
• Under Background, switch from Windows Spotlight to a Picture or the Slideshow.
• Click OK and close the Window.
• Now Log off and log in.
• Navigate to Lock screen and enable Windows Spotlight again.

Setting the timeout for Lock Screen

• Press Windows + I and select personalization.
  
• Select Lock screen.
  
  
• Select the Screen Timeout setting.
  
• Select the time of timeout you need and check.
