Windows locks up unexpectedly, requires forced boot to resolve

Since one of the windows updates late Nov/early Dec, my computer has been randomly experiencing lock ups where the system just freezes. I can move the mouse around, close out of tabs, but I can't access the taskbar, open anything or restart/shutdown the computer properly. Occasionally, I can ctrl, alt, delete and open the security screen but even through there I cannot restart the computer. It just loads until I force boot it from the tower. There is no pattern to it either, it has happened running labor intensive programs all the way to sitting idle with nothing open. I have combed through the

    Hi,

Software incompatibility could be a possible cause why you are experiencing an unexpected Windows 10 behavior. For us to provide an accurate resolution, we would need to know which build and edition of Windows is installed on your device.

In the meantime, we suggest booting your device into clean boot. This
    link
provides further information about how clean boot works and how to perform it on a Windows 10 device. If you'll
not encounter the same issue, run the Deployment Image Servicing and Management tool. It can automatically repair the components of your Windows operating system and records the corruptions to the log file.

To run the DISM tool, follow these steps:

    • Using Search, type Command Prompt.
    • Right-click on Command Prompt on the search results and then select Run as administrator. If you are prompted for an administrator password or for a confirmation, type the password or click Yes.
    • In the Command Prompt window, type DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth, and then hit Enter.
    • Once the scan is finished, restart your computer and check if the issue persists.

Keep us updated with the result.

    force lock windows when required

I just touch the power button, which switches off the screen. When I touch it again, however soon, the screen when it wakes up is in locked state. Seems to me that this might meet your need?

Then you have the "require a password after" option set to "every time". It seems however, that
Ram Subbiah uses a delay (like I do) to avoid making the lock being annoying on frequent use of the phone. However, when a delay is used like "5 minutes", then it is not possible to force the lock on before that time ellapsed.

Windows locks up unexpectedly, requires forced boot to resolve

    laptop doesnt boot automatically

    This is what happened.

    1. Did a repair install and later disabled hibertnate in CMD.
    2. Enabled legacy option ROM in BIOS.
    3. After a few times startup ( i used the system in such mode for 5 days), changed boot option back to default.
    4. Vola!! It boots automatically to win10 without any keypress. Tested it with many starts to confirm the same.
    5. Re-enabled hibernate option using CMD and later selected Fast Startup.
    6. System booted normally, without the need for any keypress.

I do not know exactly whether such steps resolved the problem or what else happened, hence cannot suggest above steps.

Many thanks to all members who helped to troubleshoot problems.
