  1. Windows login refuses AD and local accounts, asks for MS Live account

Today, two of my machines have received Windows updates and rebooted. After rebooting, the login screen showed both my username as well as an inputbox for username and password, which struck me as odd (usually it's only password if the username is displayed).

I tried to log in with the usually logged in domain user, but I could not log in. I tried my own (domain administrator) account, which could not log in either. Finally, I tried the local administrator account (yes I specified .\administrator), but that was rejected as well.

All attempts to log in give me the same error as follows (translated from Dutch): "This password is incorrect. Please check if you are using the password of your Microsoft-account. U can always reset it on account.live.com/password".

ALL user accounts are able to log in to other machines. None of these accounts are Microsoft accounts, they are either active directory accounts (users and my own) or local accounts (local administrator).

How can I fix this (keeping into account that I am not able to log in to the machine)?

All Windows versions concerned are Windows 10 1809. Upgrading to another Windows version is not an option (we are a hospital and are stuck with this version because this is the latest supported version for all hospital related software by our vendor).

I've tried removing the last Windows updates (going back to September), as well as the new Edge that has been installed today on one of those machines. To no avail, alas.

    Thanks for any suggestion!

    :)

Login screen presents both local and MS account sign in

I set up a new tablet with windows 10 and began with a Local account so I could choose my user name. Then I signed in with my MS account to sync settings.

When I start the tablet the login screen asks for my pin. I want to be able to automatically login without entering a pin or password. To do that I use netplwiz and uncheck the option to require a password for login. So far so good.

But when the tablet restarts I am presented with a login screen that now shows two accounts, my MS account and what appears to be a local account but with the same name. If I then reverse the process and enable the "require a password" option in netplwiz there is only one account shown on the login screen but then I have to use a pin or password.

How do I remove that second local account on the login screen and then login automatically? There is only one account listed in the user account settings page.

  3. Local vs Network user accounts

I just did a VM install, just to verify that I don't speak total crap.

    Steps I took:

    1. Installed Windows 10 Pro x64 Build 15063.0
    2. Entered the License Key
    3. Created a local account
    4. Went to accounts and added my Microsoft account
    5. Let Windows use this account for all apps
    6. Checked status on Microsoft account web page.
    7. Verified that the VM shows up there
    8. deleted my VM locally
    9. created a new VM installation without entering the License Key (on same VM but totally new Virtual disk)
    10. re-did steps 3-7
    11. verified that my VM is activated.

And indeed it is activated and I login to my VM using local account which is linked to my MS account. Windows login refuses AD and local accounts, asks for MS Live account :)

Should I create a Video of this or do you trust my word on it? Or better yet test it yourself if you have a valid license key you can waste on a VM.

Windows login refuses AD and local accounts, asks for MS Live account

Creating a MS account without losing Local account

Go to https://account.microsoft.com, click Create account and fill the form:

With a Microsoft account you can then use OneDrive and Office Online apps for free. You can also use built-in native Windows apps which require a Microsoft account like Mail, Skype Preview, People, Calendar and download apps from Windows Store.

See steps 3 to 5 in this tutorial to continue using local account as Windows sign-in account even when / if you download apps from store and / or use Windows apps requiring a Microsoft account, to avoid Windows user account converting to Microsoft account: Store - Use when Signing in to Windows 10 with Local Account - Windows 10 Forums
