Windows 10: Windows loses external monitor sound output after laptop goes on standby

I have an external monitor connected to my laptop and I have a set of speakers connected to the audio output of my monitor. Most of the times, everything works fine, but sometimes my laptop forgets that the external screen has an audio output. This happens when I wake it up after it "fell asleep".

The only way that I can currently fix it, is by restarting my laptop which can become annoying when I have a lot of documents open. Does anyone know why this problem occurs and how I can prevent/fix it?


A bit more details:

The problem occurs with an HDMI cable and a USB-C to Display.
The laptop still uses the screen of my monitor, but not the audio output.

It only happens when the laptop "falls asleep" and I wake it up. But it is important to know that this is a random event and does not occur every time.

Whenever this happens, all the windows that are open, are moved to my primary screen.

To fix this issue, you can try the steps below:

• Plug in both ends of the HDMI without the laptop on.
• Turn the external monitor on and set to HDMI screen.
• Boot up your laptop from a shutdown position (not restart).
• Your laptop will now recognize the external monitor and will acknowledge its presence.
• Right-click the speaker icon on the task bar and choose
  View Volume Controls.
• Set TV as default.
• Click Apply, then click Ok.

If you're trying to use a wired external monitor is it connected to the laptop's HDMI output connector or the mini DisplayPort connector?

If you're using a wired external monitor and don't see any output, right-click on an empty spot on the Desktop and select Screen Resolution -> Detect

In addition, you may need to press the F7 key and select the mode in which the display will function. There are 4 modes:

• Disconnect (or Computer only): display only on the laptop's screen
• Duplicate: the same display on the laptop's screen and the external monitor
• Extend: extends the output so that you can drag things from one screen to the other
• Projector only (or Second Screen Only): displays only on the external monitor

Or are you trying to use wireless (Wi-Di or Miracast)?

 

Monitor goes to standby and loses signal

You're pretty nice to work on an ex's rig. Is it the monitor going to standby AND the system or just one of them?
