Windows Media Player Exception code: 0xc0000005 file CompPkgSup.DLL

    Hello

My copy of Windows Media Player has decided to fail whenever I try to use it. It gives message:

Windows Media Player Exception code: 0xc0000005 file CompPkgSup.DLL [IMG]

Investigating Event Viewer I find the following:

As far as I know this might have been caused by the Windows update dated 14 03 2017, following which I now have Windows 10 64 bit Pro Version 1607 Build 14393.953.

    Any ideas?

    .

Yes, so I see. A shame that no one has identified a solution. It seems that we may have to await a fix by MS.

You could always uninstall this update and block it- wait for the next and hope. Clearly as some see this problem and others not, there is some potentially identifiable difference- knowing that might point to a fudge.

And there will be work-arounds- like using other players.

Same error. Occurred on both my desktop and my laptop (both HP computers that I upgraded from Windows 7 Pro to Windows 10 Pro a while ago). I figured it was the update that blew my Windows Media Player, because it was working fine on both computers before the update.

The next update may well be the Creators Update. I've uninstalled and hidden this update and will wait...

One difference seems to be the format of media file being played. For me it only happens for .TS files.

VLC uses its own codecs and so is immune to this problem.

Sounds like the same problem myself and other people have been getting with WMC on Windows 10, that was caused by the last update. The solution was to get old copies (2016) of CompPkgSup.dll 32bit and 64bit and overwrite the latest problem ones in System32 and SysWOW64. I did this by copying from a different computer, but I think previous versions are in WinSxS.

I got this info from My Digital Life forums, and my TV viewing on WMC is now back to normal.
