Windows media playlist(wpl) on computer to usb

A Windows media playlist (wpl) is a file not a folder. Your diagram shows 40 individual .wpl files, 40 individual playlists.
    - Playlists are just lists. They do not contain anything other than text.
    - So you cannot simply copy a playlist to another device and expect it to work.

Your .wpl files are, by default, in C:\%UserName%\Music\Playlists

Drop one of them onto an open Notepad window and you will be able to see its layout & its relative path file referencing syntax. For example,
    Code:
You can manually edit a .wpl file to use absolute path file referencing
    Code:
and WMP will still use the playlist correctly.- .wpl files only cope straightforwardly with a very few symbols or punctuation marks so if you take look at one you know contains, say, an apostrophe or a semi-colon you'll see how you would have to deal with them if you were to alter it manually.

I know nothing about the media player in your van. You will need to re-create your desired playlists in that player from scratch unless you are able to discover enough about its playlist file structure to be able to manually convert from your existing .wpl files. And, whatever .wpl file conversion you are able to do, you will also have to copy the media files themselves onto that other device.

The same applies to trying to re-use WMP playlists between computers [or between Windows OS versions or between users].
    - I use the same location for my Music folder on all my computers and also use the same locations for all my audio files. I am therefore able to copy playlists freely between them without having to make any changes to the .wpl files.

  3. Importing Playlist from Windows Media Player to Windows 8 Phone

I was able to create a play list with Windows Media Player and add it to my phone and it copied the songs. I did this with Windows 8.1 with the following steps

    • Run Windows Media Player. This is the desktop app, not the Music app from the Start screen.
    • Created a new playlist and added some songs to the playlist.
    • Started the Windows Phone App (the modern UI version, not the desktop version)
    • Clicked the "Add to phone" button and selected "Add playlists".
    • Navigated to the folder containing the playlist created by Windows Media Player. The default folder is "This PC > Music > Playlists" and the file will have a .wpl file extension.
    • Select the playlist and click the add button.
You should see some notification that the playlist and the music files were copied to the phone.

In the windows media player options under burn what does M3U mean as opposed to WPL? What is the difference between the two?

    Hi, James Gray1011

    Welcome to Microsoft Community.

WPL and M3U are two file types that are used to store playlists, or a list of audio files with its associated information like file location, title, album, artists, and other relevant information. The most common use of playlists is in segregating and grouping music files for use on computers or on portable music players.

The main difference between WPL and M3U is the principal application that uses them.

    1.WPL:

The WPL file is a Windows Media Player Playlist. Windows Media Player Playlist (WPL) files are client-side playlists that are written in a proprietary format. Microsoft introduced this file format in Windows Media Player 9 Series.

    2.M3U:

The M3U file is an M3U Playlist File. M3U began with Winamp, a very popular and free music player. M3U playlist file is a plain text file that contains the locations of one or more media files that the mediaplayer should play.

Please note that playlists are not files that can be played directly.

If there is anything not clear, please do not hesitate to let me know.

    Best Regards,
