  1. Windows Media Player shows Unknown Codec on network devices

When streaming video files over the network on Windows 10 all devices show the audio codec which is AAC as unknown in the column list. This can be seen on other Windows devices in the Audio Codec column using Media Player but displays fine on the media server, this also causes the PlayStation 3 console to have an asterix by the video file name to indicate the audio codec is incompatible. When you play a file on the PS3 it plays audio fine and displays that its AAC. None of these issues happened on Windows 7. I've tried another machine with Windows 10 as the media server and the same issue

    :)

  3. Network devices listed under Unknown in Device Manager

I have a Dell Inspiron M731R laptop upgraded from Windows 8.1 to Windows 10 Home 64-Bit that suddenly quit connecting to the home network. Was using wireless, so switched to an Ethernet cable, but still no luck. I just discovered that ALL of the network-related devices are now listed under an "Unknown" tab in the Device Manager. A check of properties of each item in that folder says they are all working properly, but that obviously isn't the case. I tried uninstalling each of the 4 items, but when they are recognized again they still show up under the Unknown tab. Any suggestions would be welcome.

Windows 10 - Codec for Media Player

    Hi Rebecca,

    Codec (coder-decoder) is
a program that compresses data to enable faster transmission and decompresses received data. Most of the time, this issue occurs when a codec that is required to play the file is not installed on the computer.
For us to come up with the proper resolution, we would like to ask for additional information:

    • Since when have you been experiencing the issue? Is this the first time that you encountered this?
    • Were there any changes made on your device prior to this?
    • Have you tried copying your music files to another device? If so, kindly check if the same issue persists.

Meanwhile, try to run the Windows Media Player Settings troubleshooter to automatically diagnose and resolve issues with your Windows Media Player. To do this:

    1. Go to Control Panel.

    2. In the search bar, at the top right, type "troubleshooting".

    3. Click on the result.

    4. Click View all from the list on the left.

    5. Select Windows Media Player Settings. Then, select
Next and follow the steps in the wizard.

We look forward to your response.
