  1. Windows Media Player sudden codec issue

Hello.I have used Media Player since Windows 10 and after upgrading to 11.I have not faced issues using .mp3 and .opus songs. However, after reinstalling Windows 11 keep files with the Media Creation tool due to a lock-screen freezeup issue after updates, it stopped supporting the .opus codec. Why is that??80% of my audio files are .opus and I do not want to convert 300 files to .mp3 which take up more space.I have tried reinstalling Media Player which didn't help. I also haven't found anything useful on the internet.Any help is appreciated.**** moved form german to english Community ****

  2. Media Player Codecs

    Hi Richie269,

    Welcome to Microsoft Community.

I'm Hahn and I'm here to help you with your concern.

It seems like you're encountering codec errors with a media player that is not Windows Media Player. Codec errors typically occur when the player lacks the necessary codecs to decode and play the video file. Here are some general steps you can take to resolve codec issues:

    - Install Missing Codecs: You might need to install the missing codec manually. You can usually find out which codec is missing from the error message. Once identified, you can download and install the codec from a reliable source.

    - Try a Different Media Player: Some media players come with a broader range of built-in codecs.

    - Convert the Video File: If a particular video format is not supported, you can use a video converter tool to convert the video to a format compatible with your media player.

For the specific issue of enabling automatic updates in Media Player, it seems like the option might not be available directly within the application. If you're using a different media player, you may need to check the official documentation or support forums for that specific player for guidance on enabling automatic updates.

Remember, it's important to download codecs only from trusted sources to avoid potential security risks. If you're unsure about the process or need further assistance, it might be helpful to reach out to the support team of the media player you're using.

I hope this helps. If there is anything not clear, please do not hesitate to let me know.

    Your Sincerely

Windows Media Player sudden codec issue

Windows 10 - Codec for Media Player

    Hi Rebecca,

    Codec (coder-decoder) is
a program that compresses data to enable faster transmission and decompresses received data. Most of the time, this issue occurs when a codec that is required to play the file is not installed on the computer.
For us to come up with the proper resolution, we would like to ask for additional information:

    • Since when have you been experiencing the issue? Is this the first time that you encountered this?
    • Were there any changes made on your device prior to this?
    • Have you tried copying your music files to another device? If so, kindly check if the same issue persists.

Meanwhile, try to run the Windows Media Player Settings troubleshooter to automatically diagnose and resolve issues with your Windows Media Player. To do this:

    1. Go to Control Panel.

    2. In the search bar, at the top right, type "troubleshooting".

    3. Click on the result.

    4. Click View all from the list on the left.

    5. Select Windows Media Player Settings. Then, select
Next and follow the steps in the wizard.

We look forward to your response.
