Windows 10: Windows Media Player won't install after recent update to Windows 10 N

Hi all, I have an N version of Windows 10. After updating to version 20H2 KB4023057 last night, windows media player and its codecs have stopped working on my computer, which is causing me issues, as other programs rely on the codecs. I have enabled WMP through Settings>Apps>Optional Features, and my PC says WMP is enabled and takes up 38.9 MB, but as far as I can tell, it does not exist on my computer. It's not in the start menu, if I search it doesn't show up, and there are no files under program files>windows media player or program filesx 86>windows media player.


Things I have tried:

1. I have restarted, then uninstalled WMP, then restarted again, then re-anabled WMP, then restarted again. I did this sequence twice

2. I tried to reregister the dll files using the following commands in CMD:

regsvr32 vbscript.dll

regsvr32 jscript.dll

regsvr32 wmp.dll

The third command returns an error message that "the module wmp.dll" failed to load.

3. I tried to get Windows Media feature pack which used to solve this issue from here: https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/mediafeaturepack but it gives me an error message "The update is not applicable to your computer" .

4. Yes I have VLC which works for some things but I need WMC codecs for other programs.


Is this a known issue, and can anybody help me enable windows media player and actually have it work? Thank you very much!

Faulty Windows Media Player

Windows Mesdis Player developed a fault (Played jerky an missed bits) so I down loaded Media Player 10.

It's no better. Any suggestions (I run Windows 98)

 

New Windows Media Player Plugin for Firefox

Anyone who uses Windows Vista and Mozilla Firefox may be pleased to hear that the Windows Media Player team has now released a plugin for Firefox that should allow the browser to play WMP content on websites. Here are the steps to get it working:

• Installation of the Windows Media Player Firefox Plugin may require administrative access to your PC. It is recommended that you close all other open browser windows before continuing with the installation.
• Click the Install button to automatically download and install the Windows Media Player Firefox Plugin.
• Depending on your security settings, you may see a Security Warning dialog box. Click Install to install the plugin.

There is a known issue if you are using Firefox version 2.0.0.3 on Windows Vista with the installer failing with error code -203. To work around this simply restart Firefox (you will get a notification that Windows Vista will be changing the Firefox compatibility settings) and then install again - the second time should succeed.

The download is available here, and the new plugin works on all versions of Windows XP and Windows Vista (although it is mostly intended for Vista, as that currently has no WMP support in Firefox).

that covers up to version 10... let me see if its diffrent for the newer versions
