Windows 10: Windows Movie Maker video problems....

Does anyone use or has used Windows Movie Maker which is a great little video editing programme ?

I know it was designed for Win 7 but in the link below it says suitable for Win 10 but having tried all I know for some reason I still can't get it to work at all. Virtual Dub is the closest but don't want to download the codec required as there's some sort of warning saying it could risk the Registry.

Windows 10 and movie maker

Before upgrading to windows 10 I had windows 8.1. And I used movie maker to make videos for YouTube. Well I just got on movie maker today after getting windows 10. and when I attempted to render the video it was black. So in search for a solution I looked
up what my problem was and I came across something saying Movie maker does not support windows ten. Is this true?

Install only Photo Gallery & Movie Maker, and untick the rest.

It work perfectly on Windows 10 on my PC (ver 1709)

 

@Arcadian, that link is NOT Microsoft Windows Movie Maker, it is a 'lookalike' called 'Windows Movie Maker 2016' and has nothing to do with Microsoft. I believe 'Windows Movie Maker 2016' includes in-app purchases to unlock some features.

The last version of Movie Maker Microsoft produced was in 'Windows Essentials 2012'. As @skcusime says, it works well in 1709 (I use it regularly). If you'd prefer another source to download the offline installer, an original Microsoft download page can be found in the Internet Archive Wayback Machine.

Now that windows movie maker is no longer there what do people use

Yes, the rest of 'Essentials' won't work/install on 1709. In fact, the offline installer may report a failed install for Movie Maker/Photo Gallery - despite what it says, the install will have worked.

Last year I had Windows Essentials 2012 offline installer downloaded and saved for rainy days before MS discontinued the support.

Yesterday, what a coincidence, I reinstalled Win 10 into a Win 7 computer which was reset to Factory Settings.(I was planning to sell it but changed my mind.)
I used the offline installer and had my WLM, Movie Maker and Photo Gallery reinstalled without a hiccup.

If someone can teach me how to upload the installer to this forum, I am more than happy to do so.
Provided, of course, I am allowed to do so.

The Offline Installer is 131 MB in size.

No need - there are already two different links to downloads in this thread. I have tested the Wayback Machine one that I gave and compared the download with my original copy - it's the same file.

Thanks for that. Was that Win10 you installed version 1709, or something earlier? I haven't tested the offline installer in 1709 yet.

 

I'd be very interested indeed as I'm really used to WMM which is still on my old Win 7 as it's so simple and quick. I always use Pot Player which is superb but it's saying "The file exists but does not have any video." Then a list of the faults as below....

And it's absolutely correct - there is no video in that file because it isn't a movie. It's a .wlmp Windows Live Movie Maker Project file, nothing more than a list of the source videos, the edit points and the transition effects saved in xml format.

 

Tried Windows Essentials again just now but wouldn't download....
