Windows 10: Windows not finding some apps and files

Suddenly today, some of my apps have stopped working, though others are OK. Windows features seem to work Explorer, calculator as does Skype. So do some non-MS apps such as Endnote, Serif PhotoPlus, AVG Tuneup and Firefox. However the following are not working: Acrobat Reader, all MS Office apps and MyHeritageFTB.

What happens is either nothing it's as if the computer ignored my clicks or I get a message that 'Windows cannot find .... AcroRd32.exe' or similar. This is true whether I try to open via the Taskbar or the Windows menu app list.

If I try to open any existing file for one of these programs, it says it can't find the file. I know the files are intact - eg PDFs won't open in Acrobat, but they will in MS Edge.

I tried safe mode - just the same.

I'm running Win10 and it seems to have done lots of updates today, the last couple of which have failed to complete.


I'd be grateful for any clues. MY kid needs this to work to do home schooling during lockdown.

Non-Store Default Apps for a file protocol in windows 10

Hi Ajo,

Thank you for posting in Microsoft Community.

I suggest you to follow the below steps.

1) Right click on the file and select choose another app to open. It will display the list of apps to open.

2) If the app is not listed then select more apps and check if you can find it.

Finding .IMG or .ISO file in Windows 8.1 Pro download

Hey guys,

In preparation for my new PC I downloaded Windows 8.1 Pro from Dreamspark, and I wanted to burn it to a DVD, so I can install it on the new PC.
However, in the downloaded files I can't find a .IMG or .ISO file anywhere. I understood that the .IMG file is the one you need to burn to the DVD?

Any suggestions?

You can use the shareware XYplorer, which has a 30-day trial period. In version 14.80, it introduced the feature that you want: Find Containing Folders. Now you can list all folders containing a certain file or file type, files of a certain size or age, or with certain other properties. You can as well list all folders NOT containing such files.
