Windows 10: Windows not responding, BSOD and some other freezing problems

I upgraded from Windows 8.1 to Windows 10 about a month ago, and the version seems to be 1511. I didn't do a clean install. At first I didn't notice much problems, but then I started getting freezes and blue screens. I use my computer almost all day but the use is not heavy: I don't play games or use any other programs than Firefox, Spotify and Skype really. On Windows 8.1 everything worked pretty fine.

I am going to send this device (2.5 years old) to a warranty fix since one of the fans is poorly attached (I assume) and hits the housing sometimes. But I wonder if the other problems I get are because of the hardware (so they maybe would be fixed for free) or if windows 10 is causing all of this.

I have got 3-4 BSOD during a few weeks, and the problems have been REFERENCE_BY_POINTER and MEMORY_USAGE. The latter sure could be because I only have 4 GB of RAM and Windows 10 used a lot of RAM, and I did some fix to that.

During the last 7 days the computer has just frozen in normal use some 3 times, I wasn't able to click on anything, and eventually it said Windows is not responding. I had to shut down the computer by pressing the power button. This has created these event 41 errors to my log (apparently 5 in a week), but I also have some event 142's there (4 in a week).

Other problems I have experienced: Skype stopped working or didn't respond and I had to restart the computer, Firefox is not responding sometimes, Task Manager and File Manager didn't respond sometime, the keyboard and/or touchpad is not working at all sometimes after booting and I have to restart (this happened sometimes on Windows 8.1 but 75 % less frequently). This computer is supposed to disable the keyboard and touchpad when the screen is turned back over 180 degrees, maybe it is related to that. One time it disabled those when having the screen turned back less than 180 degrees (normal laptop mode), so completely opposite to what it should do. Now it works fine though *Smile The computer has basically seemed slower and more buggy after I upgraded. I usually need to restart the computer a few times a day because of some freezing problem.

As you can see, my problems aren't huge, but I would want to find out the reason. Is there a problem in my SSD, RAM or any other hardware, or is windows 10 causing me this?

Windows has problems with hdd and it crashes and restarts randomly

Windows has problem addressing the HDD, my PC freezes up every 1-2 hrs and sometimes it just crashes (with BSOD or without it) unexpectedly when the HDD just locks up. I don't have any of these problems on any other OS except windows 10, 7. In the event
viewer i can see this: The system has rebooted without cleanly shutting down first. This error could be caused if the system stopped responding, crashed, or lost power unexpectedly.

 

Constant computer failures after system startup or resume

Oh, great.

Now with the Creators Update, I'm going to experience additional BSoDs and constant computer freezes as usual. If I run the Windows Memory Diagnostics tool, it will either freeze or continue to run with no problems.

The BSoD I experienced was KMODE_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED.

Sorry for not posting the file to my post: I actually put this post here accidentally, I also have other problems than BSOD and I haven't had any after those 3 I had before. I attached the needed zip file to this post, but I can continue this thread somewhere else too if needed.

The problems I have had lately is Firefox/Skype/Spotify freezing and slowness, touchpad and keyboard disabling by itself. Yesterday the internet wasn't working on Firefox (on Chrome it was), and the network diagnostics gave me an error "one or more web protocols are missing on this computer". Skype sometimes gives me errors about my sound device not working. I've ran chkdsk /r twice and the first time it repaired something with Volume Bitmap. Everything else has seemed fine with the checks I've done.

 

Unfortunately, no dump is present.
In the event logs there is 1 crash, a 0xC5(DRIVER_CORRUPTED_EXPOOL), this crash is almost always caused by a driver so it would need an actual dump to find that driver.
Please check {windows partition}\windows\minidump and check if there are any dump files saved.

Thank you for your answer. My computer was apparently only creating automatic dump files, I fixed that now, but I guess I can't find those earlier dump files anywhere. The folder is MEMORY.DMP but I couldn't see it in the Windows folder. The Minidump folder was empty of course. Can I run some program to check for corrupted drivers, or what should I do in this case?

 

If correct the memory.dmp should be overwritten each time, so the memory.dmp should contain the data needed
Please right click the memory.dmp > copy > zip and upload the zip to a 3rd party uploader.
Please share the zip, without any permission requirements, and post a link in your next reply.

The zip will be too large to upload directly in your next reply, that is why a 3rd party uploader would be needed.

 

Thank you for your quick reply. As said in the earlier post, I can't find the MEMORY.DMP file, not even when searching from my whole computer. I looked at the Windows.old and found a dmp file in Minidump, from about a month ago, about a week after I upgraded to Windows 10. Not sure why it is in Windows.old though...

 

Check the dump settings and make sure they are proper configured.
You likely have made the jump from Windows 10240 to Windows 10586 meanwhile, this creates a Windows.old folder as it is pretty much a new OS above an already existing OS.

 

Yeah the settings are just like in the BSOD Minidump instructions, it now creates them to Minidump. But previously they were created to memory.dmp, and I didn't look for that file before changing the settings, but it sure shouldn't disappear when changing the settings either. All the hidden files and folders are visible for me as well. Not sure if running CCleaner some days ago deleted the whole file :S

 

If you are using a program like Ccleaner please stop using it while troubleshooting.
This because programs like Ccleaner remove dump files that are needed to troubleshoot.
Or configure Ccleaner to not remove dump files:

 

I now disabled removing dump files. Stupid of me to realize this now... Anyway, I must've ran CCleaner after the last BSOD sometime and I haven't had any after those 3, as I said. Just freezing of different programs and keyboard/touchpad and other minor problems daily.

 

First thing I would do is to make sure the drivers from the CPU, GPU, network card, chipset and all others are up to date.

 

Thank you, that's what I probably should do. I checked Windows update, and I had no updates available. How should I check that the drivers are up to date? Should I just look at the manufacturers' websites or is using some program to find drivers recommended?
