Windows 10 Upgrade Desktop Files

I am helping someone who upgraded to Windows 10 from Windows 7, but did not back up their files. Once the update was done, they moved files from the Windows.old folder to the desktop, but now all of those files are gone. After some research it appears
Windows 10 creates a temp profile when you first update, then deletes it. How can I recover those files that were moved to the desktop? They are no longer on the Desktop or in the Windows.old folder. If I go back to Windows 7 will those files come back? Or
do I need to try to use recovery programs?

 

Does anything happens if i delete the folder "windows.old"?

Actually my first OS was windows 8 and i upgraded it to 8.1, now 8.1 to 10. after i tried to delete windows.old folder only my windows 8.1 folder only deleted, and windows 8 folder still remains(i think so, am not sure about this) now i can't delete remain

It is normal, it's a version update. The old version is in the 'windows.old' folder this is deleted after 10 days.
Your update history is then from the date of this new version, again nothing wrong it's all normal.
This is going to happen about once or twice a year, so now you know.

No idea why manufacturers fit 32GB drives, far too small.

 

Bare in mind that Windows will often back up your personal files into the windows.old folder, so you might want to check they're ok before wiping that folder.

Yes, it is quite normal for a PC to be manufactured with a previous version of Windows 10 preinstalled by the OEM, then upgrade itself to the latest version on first use - particularly as 1703 was only released in April.

The windows.old folder should automatically be deleted after 10 days to release the disk space it occupies, but it can easily be removed manually before that. Disk Clean up is one way, see this tutorial.

Delete Windows.old Folder in Windows 10
