Windows on Multi CPU 4X XEON -not multi CORES !!!

    Hi folks

I managed to rescue from "The Tip" a battered old server containing a 4 processor board -- Windows 10 - even Enterprise version only supports 2 physical processors as max AFAIK

    Mobo is X9QR7-TF-JBOD

    CPU : 4 X XEON E5-4600

Have to populate my own DDR (Memory and HDD's) and only has native USB 2 ports but enough expansion slots. CPU's came with the device -- total cost diesel to the tip and back + 0 EUR/0 USD for the server !!!!.

I have a colleague who works at the tip and rang me --said we've got some hardware you might be interested in -- well I've fixed his and his kids machines enough times !!!.

(Some people in businesses seem very fast to throw away perfectly working good hardware just because the case looks a bit wonky -- easy enough to remove mobo and put in another case !!)

"She who must be obeyed" --Said at once --"Your're not bringing that THING in here " !! so banished to my shed to set it all up.

It's booting perfectly on Linux -- I just booted from an external Linux system on a USB connected SSD device as a test-- no HDD's installed (yet) . I installed 64 GB RAM as well. Cannibalized from other bits of hardware I have lying around. Networking also OK.

What I want to do is replace 2 X NAS older HP Proliant micro servers and 1 X old tower desktop -- I can get enough VM's to run on this I'm sure.

Is the only way to run this then is to use only 2 of the CPU's without paying rediculous amounts of money for the latest Windows server versions as real Windows or run as as a whole slew of VM/s.

I'd like to try running Windows 10 Native on this but can then only use 2 CPU's AFAIK.

I did read some while ago that there was a way (unofficiallly) to unlock the CPU limitation of W10 (Pro / workstation / enterprise) using some unpublished hacks -- Any Windows gurus out there !!.

Anybody tried messing around with Windows on a multi CPU (not not Multi-Core) board.

    Cheers
    jimbo

    :)

Nope microsoft will never remove the limit partly because this is the only edge its flagship windows server has , did you know you can install active directory and start a domain on a standard installation of windows 10 ? so you can have a domain server on a non server windows installation , hence is why they fought it hard with updates when it occurred to people to do it on windows 7 else acquiring windows server expensive license becomes meaningless .

That and intel and microsoft has mutual vision to elevate the idea of multi-core cpus of more than 4 cores on products like i7 , i9 and future i11 and xeon for individuals and small businesses , while pushing for multi-cpus and slot servers for enterprises hence why it dearly costs software and hardware wise . now why windows still have support for 2 cpus resolves to backward compatibility related to IBM era back in the 90s where IBM made super dual 200 Mhz cpus towers so you can like play games without having to exit windows to dos , the good old days Windows on Multi CPU 4X XEON -not multi CORES !!! :)
