Windows Performance Analyzer vs Boot Phases (where is it?)

    Hi,

I followed the posted how-to on this forum and installed the performance toolkit and recorded my pc while its booting. I'd like to take a look at what's causing my boot time to be 4 minutes of the Windows logo and swirling dots. However, I can't d the Boot Phases section within the WPA app. I don't have the "Other" category in the left pane, which it seems like where Boot Phases is supposed to be. From what I can tell, Boot Phases is *the* category that will tell me what the boot delays are.

So, the simple question is, where do I d the Boot Phases section?

    Thanks

PS: I used all of the recommended settings in the WPR gui

    :)

  2. Slow boot analyzed with the microsoft performance analyzer (Windows 10)

Microsoft has a step by step guide that might be helpful:

Windows Performance Analyzer step-by-step guide | Microsoft Docs

    https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-hardwa...

As for boot time, here are some basic ones you can try:

Open Start > Settings > Privacy > Background apps

    Disable all Background apps.

    Disabling Windows Update:

    Press Windows key + R

    Type: services.msc

    Hit Enter

    Scroll down to Windows Update

Select it then right click it

    Click Properties

Under the General tab, choose Startup type to Disabled

    Click Stop

    Click Apply then OK

Also, check whats starting up with Windows.

    Press Windows key + X

    Click Task Manager

    Click Startup tab

    Disable all except Windows Defender.

    ------------------------------------------------------------------

    Press Windows key + R

    Type: msconfig

    Hit Enter

    Go to the services tab

Check the box, hide all Microsoft services

    Disable the remaining services

    Click Apply then OK

    Restart if prompted

    -----------------------------------------------------------------------

    Open Start, type: problem reports

    Hit Enter

Delete any failed or pending reports.

    Windows Performance Analyzer error

I would suggest to give it a try with the generalprofile only, don't add the CPU profile as the events captured with the cpu profile enabled are already included in the generalprofile.

Windows Performance Analyzer vs Boot Phases (where is it?)

    Windows Performance Analyzer error

I've been trying to run Windows Performance Analyzer to analyze a trace to resolve slow boots.
The version of the ADK I used to install the Windows Performance Toolkit is the latest one, for Windows 10 1803, as I'm currently on 17134.81.

After running the Windows Performance Recorder, with the command:

    Code:
    Code:
"%programfiles(x86)%\Windows Kits\10\Windows Performance Toolkit\wpr.exe" -start GeneralProfile -start CPU -filemode -recordTempTo %userprofile% -onoffscenario Boot -onoffresultspath C:\WPR -numiterations 1
the ETL file is created normally, with no lost events or buffers.

The reason for using the command prompt to start WPR is because a few times, that I run it from the GUI, I got the error that "The trace has dropped events. Please record this trace again". So to avoid that inconsistency I stick to the command prompt.

When trying to open the created ETL with WPA, I always get an error that events (more than a million of them) are lost.

The GeneralProfile that I use (the built-in one), has the following settings:

Collector Name : WPR_initiated_WprApp_WPR System Collector
    Buffer Size (KB) : 1024
    Number of Buffers : 405

Collector Name : WPR_initiated_WprApp_WPR Event Collector
    Buffer Size (KB) : 1024
    Number of Buffers : 81

According to the error message, I should increase the number of buffers, as the Buffer Size I think is at the max. of 1024 KB.

How can this be done? Any suggestion for resolving this problem is welcome!
