Windows 10: Windows Photos App cannot play .mkv

Yes, it cannot play .mkv files. I am aware that they can be converted to another format but I simply dont want to.

So my question is:

Can I make it run .mkv?

Or better yet - Can I make videos be played in an external program like MPC-HC for example?

Or at the very least - Can I make it display videos in the catalogue and folders views even though they are not playable so I can at least be reminded that I have such videos and if I want to play them I should navigate to the actual files and play them with an external program?

Problem with mkv Files

Hi,

Experiencing issues in playing mkv files after an update may have something to do with the video card driver. If you have another mkv player app or program, we suggest that you try playing those files using another app or program to help us sort out this

You may also try rolling back the video card driver. Follow these steps:

• Right-click the Windows key and select Device Manager.
• Locate and right-click your display adapter, then select Properties.
• Select the Driver tab and click the Roll Back Driver option.

why windows phone 8 is not able to play videos of .mkv format???

I understand that you would like to have a free video player for Windows Phones that would be able to play .mkv files. It is up to the apps' developers to decide whether they want to provide their apps for free or not. If you have a certain app in mind, you
can contact the app's developer to ask if it would be possible to have the app for free in the future.

Lost default photo viewer after profile rebuild


Thanks Brink. I've tried those steps before i started searching Google. After the profile rebuild i don't have the Photo app listed to choose to make it default in either the system settings for default apps or the Open With option.

I can't even find it doing a search. Seems to have been removed somehow with the profile rebuild, which doesn't make sense.

Might be helpful to list what i've done I've done the open with check, the choose default program in the system menu, tried that in device manager default programs also. I've checked the programs and features Turn windows features on/off and it's not listed there (never thought it was but that was a suggestion), searched the MS Store, it's not listed there either.

I don't like playing in the registry unless i have defined steps and haven't found anything for this yet, just the Win7 version like in my OP.
