Windows 10: Windows Photos: Faces detected but not recognized

Hey there,

this seems to be a Problem many have for several months. Windows Photos stops to recognize persons after about 200 photos and does never every continue. Looking into the database file reveals that there have been more than 100 000 faces detected, however there are merely 20 persons with a combined total of less than 200 images (I have more than 160 000 images in my library all tagged and hashed). I suspect that this has to do with limited Azure calls, but running Photos for a week at least 8 hours for a day has not helped me at all. It does all functions correctly but putting the faces to persons.
Any form of reset and reindexing causes the same situation, the very same 200 images will have faces detected with persons connected, none else. If I add fresh photos, it will shift to these. If I add older folder first, it will take the 200 initial images but gives up soon after.

I believe the issue is located in Azure somehow, they return a "no" for having used too many calls that day and never get asked again to detect some more faces. I would be okay with doing 3000 a day only, it would take a month for me, but not 6 months of it not working.

There is no acknowledgement from Microsoft that this issue exists and they are looking into it. On a computer where you never reset the Photos app, it might work better giving some more question into what resetting, and uninstalling makes if you even delete the folders and remove the registry entries. It still knows you.

Microsoft Photos app not recognizing faces in photos

I understand that the face recognition in Microsoft Photos app is not working properly after resetting the app. We will look into this for you. However, in order to get a better clarity on the issue, please reply with the following details:

• Which version of Photos app is installed on the computer?
  
• Which version of Windows is installed on the computer?
  

The Photos app recognizes the faces from the contacts saved in the People app. If the Photos app is unable to recognize the faces in the photos then, I suggest you to try resetting the People app and see if that helps in resolving the issue:

1. Press and hold Windows key + I, to open
   Settings.
   
2. Click on Apps.
   
3. Click on Apps & features.
   
4. Scroll down and look for
   People app, click on it and click on Advanced options.
   
5. Click on Reset to reset the application.
   

Note: Resetting the app will reset it to default settings. You will have to re-add the account to People app after resetting it.

If resetting the app didn’t fix the issue, I suggest you to manually add the contacts in People app whose face is not getting detected in the Photos app. You can refer the section

Turn On or Off Face Detection and Recognition in Windows 10 Photos app


This feature seems to be bugged on the latest version. Photos with faces are recognized and listed in the "tag list" under search box, but "People" tab is empty. Tested on another device with exactly the same result...

edit: Well, I figured it out. Gallery must contain at least 3 photos of a person to show up on "People" tab. *Wink

 

Photos app face recognition and naming people detected

I don't doubt that face recognition, naming and merging works after one or more reinstalls. But did you also check the recognition rate? Before the reset, the app recognized 999 photos with the face of my elder son. But i could not give a name to the photos.
After several resets, I could give names to the thumbnails, but it recognized only 378 photos of my son (see screenshot on page 3 of this forum). For other persons, the detection rate degraded even more.
