Windows 10: Windows Photos will no longer open.

My HP Laptop suffered a complete meltdown the other day of which I had to reinstall windows 10 along with settings for Office etc.


Once complete, all seems ok ... but ... went to look at a picture with Microsoft Photos being the default app.


Messages keep cropping up eg File system error -2147219196. and I've browsed the internet for help.


I've tried

1 Opening Microsoft Photos settings ... attempted both Repair and Reset powering off and re-starting to no avail

2 uninstalling Microsoft Photos, powering off and re-installing to no avail

3 Attempted to follow regedit instructions getting to "Microsoft.Windows.Photos_8wekyb3d8bbwe" folder with 4 folders within. Instructions were to remove up to two of them but don't know which, so avoided that option.


I also read that there may be issues with the route source of the picture, if that's the case, it's my whole PC as no matter where a picture may reside ie Desktop, C Drive, D Drive or the Mapped Network external Drive the same message arises.


I'm no PC expert but know my way around enough to follow clear instructions. I've tried resolving this myself by checking out numerous other posts on the web but I now wave the white flag of defeat ... Can someone help

Cheap Photo box that will get the job done

WEll i took on this project for PP hes a hardware reviewer and wants to get the professional looking pics for the Pc parts

Materials:

• Big cardboard box

• a razor

• white material 3 yards

• cone lights

• stapler

• medical tape

• pvc pipe about 6 inches longer than your box

• white paint any cheap finger paint would work

the project I'm guessing will cost me $30 if it works out properly
I will post pictures and step by step as i do it

 

Photos are opening with Paint instead of Photos app

It's likely that your default application for opening photos is Paint. To change your default program in Windows 10 from
Paint to the Photo app, we suggest that you perform the following steps:

• On the Start menu, select Settings.
  
• Go to System, then go to Default apps.
  
• Select Photos or any app that you like to be the default under
  Photo viewer.

Lost default photo viewer after profile rebuild

Thanks Brink. I've tried those steps before i started searching Google. After the profile rebuild i don't have the Photo app listed to choose to make it default in either the system settings for default apps or the Open With option.

I can't even find it doing a search. Seems to have been removed somehow with the profile rebuild, which doesn't make sense.

Might be helpful to list what i've done I've done the open with check, the choose default program in the system menu, tried that in device manager default programs also. I've checked the programs and features Turn windows features on/off and it's not listed there (never thought it was but that was a suggestion), searched the MS Store, it's not listed there either.

I don't like playing in the registry unless i have defined steps and haven't found anything for this yet, just the Win7 version like in my OP.
