Windows Portable Device Code 10 Error - PQSERVICE Partition

    Hi to all,

I have encountered a rather unusual device manager error following a 1703 Creator's Edition Update to a friend's Packard Bell Easynote LJ61 64 Bit Laptop.

To offer a little background, this Laptop was originally a Windows Vista machine when purchased. It was subsequently upgraded on their behalf by me initially to Windows 7 and then later to Windows 10. I have also completed a number of further clean installs to incorporate both the 1511 Fall and 1607 Anniversary Updates although on this current occasion I elected to complete the 1703 Creator's update as an in-place upgrade using a DVD burned from the file created with the latest Media Creation Tool.

The hardware was also given a modest makeover at the time of the 1607 update with the incorporation of an additional 750 GB Western Digital HDD Drive (set as the new master drive containing the C: partition) to compliment the original 250 GB Hitachi TravelStar drive which has now been mounted in the secondary drive bay. Both drives have been further sub partitioned to provide personal storage areas and the original C: drive partition (as updated to the 1511 Update) also retained so as to recover any data found to be missing from the subsequent installs.

Much care was taken during the initial upgrade to Windows 7 to maintain the manufacturer's original (Vista) recovery partition on the 250 GB drive so as to enable reversion to original state for any future sale. The integrity of this partition within the 250 GB (now secondary drive) has been preserved through all subsequent Windows 10 Pro updates and as such is still available for that purpose now.

Windows 10 Pro adds each of the partitions for both the 750 GB and 250 GB drives to the Portable Device Section of the Device Manager and allocates the WPD FileSystem Volume Driver in each case. So far as all of the 'Physical' partitions are concerned this is functions without problem however, Windows 10 also finds the original recovery partition as a drive partition in its own right!

The Acer Recovery partition (PQSERVICE) is in fact a virtual 'mounted volume' within the original C: (now H: in its new secondary position) partition. It is reported with its path "H:\ACER\Preload\Acer\Recovery\HPartition" in Device Manager using the same WPD FileSystem Volume Driver as the other (functioning) partitions but it carries the yellow exclamation mark and reports "This device cannot start. (Code 10).

The attached screenshot shows the situation as reported in Windows 10.

I must confess to being at a loss as to how to resolve this and would welcome any expertise you can offer!

Many thanks (in advance) for any help and support,

    :)

  2. Hard drive not recognized Windows 10

I recently partitioned a 1 T hard drive on a new PC and now Windows 10 won't recognize a new 2 T Seagate portable hard drive that it recognized before. Is the partition the problem? Is there a way to make W 10 recognize the portable?

Troubles with new PC Suite 682_rel_21_0_ger (Installation Issue)

I have exactly the same problem with the English version of 6.82 (rel 22) - I get the 'Device cannot start (code 10)' error message.

Everything else is working fine - it's just the Windows Portable Device drivers that have a problem.

    Hi Samuria,

    Thanks for your reply............

I suspect that this is something to do with the mounted volume properties as it is the HPartition 'file' from which the PQSERVICE derives - upon clicking properties (see the dialogue box to the left of the one you have observed with the '0 Bytes'). The HPartition file itself is 13 Mb so far from empty.... That said I have no idea why Windows 10 shows it in that manner??

.....meant to add that the Preload folder and it's subs (from within which the HPartition file resides) hold 2.3 Gb of data.....

The Preload folder and its' subs is a directory under the H: drive letter, not a partition.
In the Device Manager, right click the drive with the Yellow ! mark, what does it say?

    Hi Spunk,

Thanks for replying to the thread.

Your observation is correct, however it is the 'Virtual' Partition named HPartition which is being picked up as a 'Portable Device' (as is the case with the 'Physical' partitions) and Device Manager reports it with it's full path as shown in the screenshot above.

Right clicking the item in Device Manager offers a standard drop down with Update driver, Disable device, Uninstall device, Scan for hardware changes & Properties (which produces the dialogue box at the bottom right of my screenshot) The General tab of which simply reports 'This device cannot start. Code 10'

I trust that this is what you were querying?

    Thanks again,

Uninstall the "Device" with the yellow flag in Device Manager, Now right click any device, and choose Scan For Hardware Changes. Does the Virtual drive come back?

Every time!! I have even asked Device Manager to show hidden devices and removed each of those redundant duplicate copies for each of the Portable Device entries....no joy unfortunately!!
